If you give birth in Finland, you're in luck! Along with your new bundle of joy, the government gives you a maternity box filled with clothes, sheets, toys, and a mattress.
Finland's schools are well integrated in communities and teachers are highly committed, making it a top PISA performer with little variation among pupils of differing backgrounds.
Located in Karjaa, Finland, “Apelle” is a wooden home by architect Marco Casagrande that resembles a cozy one-family home as much as it does a stranded boat in the middle of the woods. It may be rurally located in a country known for harsh, icy winters, but geothermal energy keeps it warm and cozy without the use of dirty energy sources.

Sony clearly has a lot of faith in the brand. The movie isn't slated to hit theaters until July 2016. The move is the latest in Rovio’s quest for Angry Birds world domination. In addition to the seven Angry Birds games (including Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Star Wars) there are Angry Birdsbooks, Angry Birds merchandise and an Angry Birds cartoon. Rovio unveiled the in-game animated shorts in March and so far the toons have been viewed 150 million times. It’s amazing that such a simple game is spawning such a vast franchise. Who would have thought that throwing birds with a slingshot would result in a business worth hundreds of millions of dollars?
In the hands of innovative chefs, Finland's local ingredients come into their own at new Helsinki restaurants, writes Leisa Tyler. In years gone by, Nordic food was considered as glum as northern Europe's winter sun. Perhaps spurred on by the success of what is being dubbed "new Nordic cuisine" and the trailblazing kitchen of Rene Redzepi and his Copenhagen restaurant Noma, or perhaps influenced by the locavore movement sweeping the restaurant world, the cuisine from the far northern reaches of continental Europe is experiencing a revolution. Discarding imported products and the borrowed culinary styles of France and Italy - traditionally very influential in Nordic countries - chefs have been turning their focus inward and rediscovering the bounty of their own gastronomic heritage.
Summer is a natural phenomenon, yet it is also a state of mind: The world is again full of possibilities, joys and pleasures. The change is dramatic. Mother Nature, who so recently lay dormant and frozen under a blanket of snow, bursts into wild blossom as summer arrives. The onset of summer is also reflected in people. They can finally cast off their heavy winter clothes. Shoulders long hunched together against icy winds can finally relax; steps become lighter and faces brighter. The Finns make the most of their summer. Read more about Finnish summer:http://bit.ly/10aPfvr
In Finland, May Day is not complete without tippaleipä, a funnel cake only sold around May Day, and a glass of sima, a home-brewed soda made with lemon and honey. The national holiday is a celebration of "worker's day," but it also marks the arrival of spring and the end of yet another long, dark winter. For kids,Vappu is all about visiting the outdoor May Day markets in the city, where knickknacks of every type are sold, from whistles to big helium balloons.
With stark differences between seasons, Finns are used to contrasts: the dark Arctic winters have their counterpart in one of the most iconic of Finnish natural phenomena, the Midnight Sun. This film is made for Visit Finland.

The Midnight Sun – a unique phenomenon best experienced in Finnish Lapland. After a long and dark winter, the light-filled summer is greeted with a newly found joie de vivre all around Finland. In Lapland, the Midnight Sun makes up for the light deprived by the Polar Night during the winter. At the Arctic Circle, where Lapland’s capital Rovaniemi lies, the Midnight Sun graces the horizon from early June until early July. In Nuorgam, Finland’s northernmost tip, the sun stays up for more than 70 days, in other words all summer.
For 75 years, Finland's expectant mothers have been given a box of baby clothes and bedding by the state. Some say it helped Finland achieve one of the world's lowest infant mortality rates. It's a tradition that dates back to the 1930s and it's designed to give all children in Finland, no matter what background they're from, an equal start in life. The maternity package - a gift from the government - is available to all expectant mothers.
Your Better Life Index by the OECD shows how Finland performs according to the importance you give to the 11 topics – like education, housing, environment, and so on – that contribute to well-being. In general, Finns are more satisfied with their lives than the OECD average, with 82% of people saying they have more positive experiences in an average day (feelings of rest, pride in accomplishment, enjoyment, etc) than negative ones (pain, worry, sadness, boredom, etc). This figure is higher than the OECD average of 80%.

Jolla, the Finnish MeeGo startup comprised of ex-Nokians building their own mobile hardwareand Sailfish OS, has finally taken the wraps off its first handset, revealing what the hardware will look like on its website. The design is a clean looking, elegant slab, with the most stand-out feature being the coloured shell on the back that wraps around half the sides of the phone to create a dual-tone sandwich effect
Why the U.S. emphasis on "teacher effectiveness" won't by itself really improve schools. Finland’s Pasi Sahlberg is one of the world’s leading experts on school reform and the author of the best-selling“Finnish Lessons: What Can the World Learn About Educational Change in Finland?” In this piece he writes about whether the emphasis that American school reformers put on “teacher effectiveness” is really the best approach to improving student achievement.
The Russian-speaking population of Finland has doubled in a decade and is expected to continue expanding at the same pace. The 100,000 mark is likely to be passed during the 2020's. "If the proportion of Russian speakers among all immigrants remains the same, in 2050 they will number 200,000 to 240,000," calculates Director Ismo Söderling of the Institute of Migration.
Snow, Cold and Nokia: the three words I most often hear associated with Finland. Yet the Nordic Country -- full of swathes of untapped wilderness, quirky and creative design and up-and-coming cuisine -- has a lot more that meets the eye, especially in the summer. I was lucky enough to spend an idyllic August exploring -- by foot, train, plane, and bikes (free in cities such as Helsinki with a deposit). But if you only have a week, there's still a trove of highlights that can be enjoyed.

In less than a year Supercell has launched two of the biggest apps in Apple's history. It's now grossing $70 million--a month. Is that Mr. T? The Hog Rider is one of the many characters in Clash of Clans, a game by Finnish developer Supercell.
Humans have been fascinated by this unpredictable, eerie light show for centuries. But it’s amazing how little we know about the science behind it. The thermometer on the car is reading -22C. Outside, we are standing in snow up to my knees. We’re in a region called Inari in Finnish Lapland, inside the Arctic Circle, the nearest town is some kilometres to the south of us. You would be forgiven for thinking you were in Narnia, next to a frozen lake and surrounded by snow-topped pine trees. I can see more stars then I have ever seen before and some of the constellations such as Cassiopeia are difficult to spot, the sky is so free from light pollution. Which is supposedly the ideal place to do what I am doing; I’m one of a small group of people in search of the Northern Lights.
