We don't do small talk in Finland. We don't even have a Finnish word for small talk - jutustelu is probably quite close, but not exactly the same. For us it's perfectly normal to be quiet in company - for example at a lunch table. The only chit chat topic that we master is the weather. That's what we do, in Facebook too: snow <3

No-snow winter puts Finnish 'snow-how' on ice - AsiaOne

No-snow winter puts Finnish 'snow-how' on ice - AsiaOne | Finland | Scoop.it

Helsinki's streets are festive with vibrant Christmas decorations and bright advertisements tout the season's must-have gifts as shoppers bustle through packed stores, yet something is amiss: there's no snow.

The absence of white stuff has not only left Christmas revellers gloomy, it has affected businesses ranging from ski resorts to retailers and of course, snow removal companies.

Finnish tourist industry urged to prepare for snowless winters

Finnish tourist industry urged to prepare for snowless winters | Finland | Scoop.it
Fresh research published on Tuesday shows that climate change could have a
definitive effect on the tourism industry in the north of Finland.

The lack of ice and snow could also necessitate the construction of new artificial skiing trails and ice rinks.

Climate change will affect winter weather more than summer conditions in Finland. The hottest days currently experienced during summer will become more common, heatwaves will lengthen, and winter will be shorter than they are now.
Researchers point out, though, that the changing climate could bring new tourism opportunities to the north of Finland because of the shortened winter and lower precipitation levels. They also advocate year-round tourism, as opposed to reliance on the shrinking winter.
Artificial winter facilities will require energy, and the researchers see possibilities to use bio and geothermal sources to help power new winter sports attractions.

Fall Through The Ice,A Cold Weather Danger

Fall Through The Ice,A Cold Weather Danger | Finland | Scoop.it

It seems Santa Claus has more to worry about than who made the naughty list. Last November, he lost as many as 50 prospective sleigh transporters when the reindeer froze to death after falling through the ice in Norway. Though lakes and rivers in Norway, Sweden, and Finland freeze early, the frozen layer is thin, making it possible for even the lightest creatures to fall through the ice.

The babies who nap in sub-zero temperatures

The babies who nap in sub-zero temperatures | Finland | Scoop.it
Would you put your baby or toddler outside in the freezing cold for their lunchtime nap? Many Nordic parents wouldn't give it a second thought.

Finland's 'official' nap advice

Irrespective of the season, many children have their evening naps outside in prams.

Many babies sleep better outdoors in the fresh air than in the bedroom. Sleeping outdoors is not dangerous for a baby. One may gradually start going outdoors when the baby is two weeks old.

Lack of Snow Cancels World Cup Ski Races in Finland | First Tracks!! Online Ski Magazine

Lack of Snow Cancels World Cup Ski Races in Finland | First Tracks!! Online Ski Magazine | Finland | Scoop.it

Levi, Finland -International Ski Federation (FIS) officials confirmed Thursday that the Audi FIS Alpine World Cup slalom races slated for Nov. 12-13 in Levi, Finland have been canceled due to lack of snow.

“The decision was clear in the end, since there was no snow on the race hill on the day of the snow control and the forecast didn’t promise any significant cold front. We can’t postpone the races by a week, since the speed events in Lake Louise (Canada) would be too close in the calendar,” said General Secretary of the organizing committee, Mikko Saarinen.
