(ANIMAL STUDY) Research conducted in Finland provides yet another reason why pets are a great addition to a family. According to the recent study, infants living in homes with pets are less likely to have health-related problems than those living without. While the exact reasoning for this correlation remains uncertain, the unprecedented findings shines a new light onto our relationship with animals. — Global Animal

Why cellphones are an accident waiting to happen - New Scientist (blog)

Why cellphones are an accident waiting to happen - New Scientist (blog) | Finland | Scoop.it

Ever tripped on a staircase or walked into a street lamp while eagerly checking your texts/tweets/emails on your cellphone? If so, you're not alone: a Finnish study has looked at how mobile phones distract us while we are at work or at play. It's a novel study because to date most research has focussed on the distraction risk mobile phones pose to drivers, generally citing a fourfold increase in crash risk to motorists yakking away on their phones...

Jane Cox, a student at Provo’s Timpview High, has examined rocks from both Earth and space to take a run at the age-old question:
Is there life on other planets?

Only three of the 1,600 students who competed at the Intel fair last month won all-expenses-paid trips to the EU fair this September in Helsinki, Finland. There, they will be exhibitors, not competitors. The Intel fair draws from 443 regional science competitions in 65 countries.

Early substance abuse risk different in girls and boys with ADHD

Washington, June 11: Boys and girls with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder may differ from each other in their vulnerability to substance use problems, according to a new research.

Researchers of the University of Helsinki and University of Jyvaskyla, Finland assessed a total of 1545 Finnish adolescents assessed for DSM-IV-based ADHD symptoms by their parents and classroom teachers using standardized rating scales at age 11-12 years.

Baseline ADHD symptoms were less common among girls than boys, but among girls they were more predictive of adverse substance use outcomes once conduct disorder and previous substance use were controlled for.

The Great Reversal is Under Way in our Forests

The Great Reversal is Under Way in our Forests | Finland | Scoop.it
New research shows that forests in many regions across the planet are actually becoming larger carbon sinks, thanks to an increase in density, if not in spread. Europe and North America both saw increases in carbon storage despite little to no expansion of the forest areas.

The study, conducted by conducted by Rockefeller University scientists with colleagues at Connecticut’s Agricultural Experiment Station and the University of Helsinki in Finland, and published online in the open-access journal PLoS One, gives great hope in a day and age where most environmental news seems to be another indictment on the human race.

Helsinki Finishes Year-Long Study, Now Ready to Get Serious About Getting a Guggenheim - UnBeige | Finland | Scoop.it

Nearly a year ago to the date, you might recall a post we had up about the Guggenheim Foundation looking into building a new museum wing in Helsinki, Finland. The project, if it happened, would be the next branch built after Frank Gehry‘s Guggenheim Abu Dhabi had finally risen from the desert. But with Gehry’s project now stalled, perhaps permanently, suddenly after a year of relative silence, both the organization and Helsinki’s government are back to chatting publicly about their collaboration.

Nano Patents and Innovations: Denser Forests Capturing More Carbon

Nano Patents and Innovations: Denser Forests Capturing More Carbon | Finland | Scoop.it
Forests in many regions are becoming larger carbon sinks thanks to higher density, US and European researchers say in a new report. In Europe and North America, increased density significantly raised carbon storage despite little or no expansion of forest area, according to the study, led by Aapo Rautiainen of the University of Helsinki, Finland, and published by the online, open-access journal PLoS One. These photos from the same spot in Finland, taken in 1893 (l) and in 1997 (r) show that while the forest area is the same, the trees are larger in the later photo.

Finnish study finds little E10-E5 petrol mileage difference

Finnish study finds little E10-E5 petrol mileage difference | Finland | Scoop.it
Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT), a government-funded body, said in a statement Monday that laboratory tests carried out with six cars of various makes indicated that the mileage difference between 95E10 and 98E5 grades of petrol was one per cent in favour of the latter.

Juhani Laurikko, a VTT researcher, said motorists had no reason to avoid filling up with 95E10.

The Finnish Petroleum Federation said sales of 95E10, a fuel that contains 10 per cent of ethanol, had risen in May to equal 98E5 sales.

"Factual information is beginning to do the trick," said Helena Vänskä, the managing director of the lobby.

"I hope that motorists will notice that mistrust toward E10 petrol is unfounded."
