From wife-toting to swamp soccer, Finns play to win

From wife-toting to swamp soccer, Finns play to win | Finland | Scoop.it

HELSINKI — This month, Finns are challenging the Olympic Games for the limelight — with world competitions in air guitar, wife-carrying and mobile-phone throwing.

And don’t forget swamp soccer, as if you could.

Those are just some of the weird “world championships” held in Finland that, while lacking the grandeur of the London Olympics, definitely outdo the Summer Games with a wild wackiness all their own...

Kimi Raikkonen is back in Formula One, and it didn't take the Iceman long to make the headlines.

After two years spent rallying, some questioned if the Finn still had what it takes to compete in F1, but he proved his doubters wrong in Jerez.

Now the 2007 world champion is looking forward to competing in 2012 for Lotus GP.

Wild prospect Granlund was so close - Boston Herald

Wild prospect Granlund was so close - Boston Herald | Finland | Scoop.it
It also ultimately might have cost the Finns a medal because the Finns were trounced in the bronze medal game, 4-0 by Canada. "Big disappointment," Granlund said afterward.

Mikael Granlund has delivered on the big stage countless times, but the Wild’s most prized prospect won’t soon forget the puck sliding off his stick in a must-score shootout attempt in the semifinals of the World Junior Championships.

To add insult to injury, Granlund’s miss catapulted the rival Swedes into Thursday night’s gold medal game, where they beat Russia 1-0 in overtime. It also ultimately might have cost the Finns a medal because the Finns were trounced in the bronze medal game, 4-0 by Canada.

EDMONTON – The Finnish National Junior Team has visions of making up for last year’s sixth-place showing at the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship.

The Finns won their third straight game in the Group B preliminary-round pool, beating the Czech Republic 4-0 at Rexall Place on Saturday to finish second in the five-team field.

“It means a lot and it’s good for Finland, good for our team and the boys,” Finnish coach Raimo Helminen said. “It’s always good to win because the confidence grows and grows and I hope that keeps going.”

Ulla M. Saikku's insight:

CAN you name Father Christmas’s favourite football team?

Snow joke. It’s an easy shout in Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland, where locals could be forgiven for singing “There’s only two Santa Claus...”

FC Santa Claus is a football club based in the Finnish city tucked inside the Arctic Circle.

This is also where all the letters to Saint Nick from the children of the world are delivered at this time of year.

Diving Ojamo Mine in Finland with the Suunto Test Dive Team | Scuba Diver Girls | Finland | Scoop.it

I met up with the Suunto test dive team out front of their dive trailer parked in the loading dock of the factory. It is the dive trailer every tech diver dreams of. A multi-gas compressor, tanks of all shape and size stored neatly; reels, spools and other gadgets hanging from hooks. I glance down and see 6 tanks with my name on them and I begin to get excited for the adventure that awaits. I analyze my tanks, pick up some weight and off we go to Ojamo….http://bit.ly/MeqSSA

Cross-country skiing | Finland | Scoop.it

The entire world is blue and white. The snow is a meter deep and there is not a single cloud in the pale blue sky. The spruce trees are white cones bowed down beneath a mantle of snow. The best way to explore this winter landscape is on cross-country skis. Glide through the silent forest and across a frozen lake. Climb to the top of a hill and then tuck your ski poles under your arms for your reward, a long glide down the other side...

You will ride through stunning archipelago sceneries. The islands are connected by numerous bridges and ferries. The peace and tranquility, particularly in the rugged outer islands, is a unique experience. Most of the roads’ surfaces are paved. A NOBLE Park community group is taking great strides with a Finnish-inspired exercise.

The Arabic Women Seniors Group has received funding from Arthritis Victoria to purchase Nordic walking sticks, which are used by the participants, most with arthritis, to enhance their movement while walking.

Nordic walking was developed in Finland by cross-country skiers who maintained their physical fitness over summer by walking with their ski poles.

General manager of training, information and programs at Arthritis Victoria Jane Glatz likened the exercise to being on a cross-trainer.

She said research indicated people who used Nordic poles had a greater cardiovascular workout.

Tournament turnaround for Finland | Hockey | Sports | London Free ... | Finland | Scoop.it
Weird the way it's worked with the Finns so far here.

Maybe it was the crowd again, laughed Raimo Helminen.

"Same people. Totally different. Life is changing fast," said the Finland coach.

After his Suomi squad froze like so many elks in headlights in front of an NHL arena full of frenzied Canadian fans, losing 8-1 on opening night, his teenagers showed up at Rexall Place to play the Americans Wednesday and found the crowd was, at least in a hockey sense, anti-American. And pro Finland.

The result was a 4-1 Finland win over the USA.

Tournament on!
