Sea route from Northern Norway to Asia intrigues Finnish business

Climate change has opened the Northeast Passage in the Arctic Ocean to year-round sea traffic. The distance to the Far East around Siberia is shorter.
Transport from Eastern Europe and even from Turkey will go by rail from Kirkenes in the north of Norway, from where they will pass through Finland to the south.
Finns are set to cash in at every phase.

From my weekend trip to Helsinki, Finland. http://www.flickr.com/photos/niklausgerber/with/5827978622/

Suomenlinna, until 1918 Viapori (Finnish), or Sveaborg (Swedish), is an inhabited sea fortress built on six islands (Kustaanmiekka, Susisaari, Iso-Mustasaari, Pikku-Mustasaari, Länsi-Mustasaari and Långören), and which now forms part of the city of Helsinki, the capital of Finland.

Environment Committee calls for investigation into adverse effects of carpet-washing on sea water

Environment Committee calls for investigation into adverse effects of carpet-washing on sea water | Finland | Scoop.it
Plans in motion to remove picturesque but "environmentally questionable" washing platforms by 2016

Ask a (male) foreign visitor to Helsinki for a list of the most attractive features of the city in summer, and pretty soon you will come up with an answer that includes words like "carpet-washing", "wooden jetties", "blonde women in skimpy clothing", and a measure of incredulity that the carpets "don't get stolen".
However, the traditional wooden platforms for washing mats and carpets may not be around for that much longer. Though popular with locals and tourists alike, they are coming under attack as being a bit of a blot on the city's escutcheon as it tries to improve the parlous state of the Baltic Sea.

The Sea and the Cities

The Baltic Sea is one of the largest brackish water bodies in the world. It is an especially sensitive sea, because it is a shallow and semi-enclosed body of water that receives a considerable load of pollutants from the surrounding countries. The pollution of the sea has become one of the most important common environmental issues for countries in Northern Europe. Today's environmental problems are, however, the collective result of political decisions made in the past. Hence there is an evident need to understand the current environmental changes of the Baltic Sea from historical perspectives.

World’s largest two-masted yacht will soon unfurl its sails

World’s largest two-masted yacht will soon unfurl its sails | Finland | Scoop.it
Buyers of luxury sailing vessels are few and far between. Even one yacht can give work to the boatbuilders for several years.

The 60-metre ketch-rigged superyacht referred to as Panamax (from maximum Panama mast height) that has been under construction for the past four years in a hall at the Baltic Yachts shipyard in Pietarsaari is the largest composite-structure ketch in the world.
Next week it will be given the chance to unfurl its sails for the first time, which presumably will be quite a spectacle in the open sea.
