Running hot and cold

Running hot and cold | Finland | Scoop.it

Lisa Hynes joins the Finns in a sauna, a beating and an icy plunge.
I brace myself. Though it's 80 degrees inside this crowded sauna, outside it's minus 25. My beaming, red-faced Finnish friends insist I'll be converted by my first experience of avantouinti, or ice-hole swimming, so I take a draught of vodka, draw breath and take the plunge.
This is my first visit to Finland in the winter. Finland is cold. I hate the cold. But family ties beckon, so here I am at dusk, cocooned in my many layers, at the Rastila camping ground in Helsinki.

The Berry Pickers: The Finnish Sauna

The Berry Pickers: The Finnish Sauna | Finland | Scoop.it

The sauna is one of my favorite things in Finland. Especially when it’s frigid outside and I’m laid out on a sauna bench soaking in the hot; condensation dripping from my cold beer or lonkero (Finnish gin long drink).

Most Finnish houses and even many apartments are equipped with a sauna. It’s a deep seated tradition that’s been around for centuries. On Saturday night we’d make last minute trips to the market to buy drinks and shove them in the freezer before heading outside. I used to love walking in the growing dark, listening to the quiet crunch of snow underfoot and smelling wood smoke. When we’d get back, we’d peel off our layers of clothes and start a fire in the fireplace while the sauna warmed.

Finland's Best Saunas - Travel + Leisure

Finland's Best Saunas - Travel + Leisure | Finland | Scoop.it
The sauna, a centuries-old ritual in Finland, has staying—and healing—powers.
Finland is a country of extreme contrasts—summers of dizzying, full-time light, followed by depressingly long, dark winters. The sauna regulates it all, offering the benefits of winter in summer and summer in winter, while reducing the anxieties of modern life.

Finland’s midsummer madness

Finland’s midsummer madness | Finland | Scoop.it
Usually the third weekend in June, 'Juhannus' is a weekend of bonfires, saunas and public revelry under the midnight sun.
Finns head for their cottage in the Lakelands. Many cottages still enjoy traditional saunas right down to the wood fire that has best lashed with beer to give the steam the yeasty flavour of a bakery. No real Finnish sauna is complete without vihta, the bunch of fresh birch twigs that are whacked against the skin to release their sap. After the self-flagellation, it is time to start drinking your way towards Saturday night’s bonfire...

Why Finland loves saunas

Why Finland loves saunas | Finland | Scoop.it

The only Finnish word to make it into everyday English is "sauna". But what it is, and how much it means to Finns, is often misunderstood - and it's definitely not about flirtation or sex.

In a dimly lit wood panelled room, naked men sit in silence, sweating. One beats himself repeatedly with birch branches. Another stands, takes a ladle of water and carefully pours it over the heated stones of the stove in the corner.

There is a hissing noise.

Say HEL-lo to Helsinki: A Dip at the All-Nude Uimahalli Sauna and Swimming Pool - Jaunted (blog)

Say HEL-lo to Helsinki: A Dip at the All-Nude Uimahalli Sauna and Swimming Pool - Jaunted (blog) | Finland | Scoop.it

Helsinki's fantastic Uimahalli sauna and (inside) swimming pool complex is tucked away on Yrjönkatu, a short walk from the main railway station and the center of town.

At five euros for a single visit, it's one of the cheapest—and most authentically Finnish—things you can do in this otherwise expensive city.

The sexes alternate between the days—Monday, Wednesday and Friday are for the ladies, while Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday are gents' days. Sunday's split between the two, with gents from 8-9 in the morning and ladies for the rest of the day.

Leave your swimsuit at home (you can swim with yours on, but be daring and bare it all)! Your entrance fee includes a towel, and then you hop in the shower to rinse off before steaming along with a dozen or so of your new closest Finnish friends in the saunas.

Turku The Finnish coastal city is one of three European Capitals of Culture for 2011 (alongside Sarajevo and Tallinn) and is using the occasion to celebrate the national obsession with the sauna. Artists have created four new saunas in the city, which will be open to the public until late August. Speech by Secretary of State Torstila at International Sauna Congress - Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland: Current affairs

“Sauna Diplomacy; the Finnish Recipe”

Foreword: Finnish saunas are not only a commercial but also a diplomatic item of export worldwide. “Sauna Diplomacy”, solving domestic as well as international disputes in the high heat of sauna has been taught for Finnish diplomats for decades.
Ladies and gentlemen,
There are about three million saunas in Finland, more than one for every two of the 5.3 million Finns. And did you know that Finland is a country where there are more saunas than cars? Practically all houses in the rural areas have saunas of their own. It is hard to imagine a Finnish summer cottage by a lake without a sauna...
