Sharp differences in Greater Helsinki area municipalities in reception of refugees - Helsingin Sanomat | Finland | Scoop.it

Refugees - and foreigners in general - are concentrated in the metropolitan area and in the municipalities along the railway line leading north.

 

In 2011, six municipalities in the Greater Helsinki area have accepted no refugees so far, while the authorities are hunting for municipalities willing to open their doors to refugees.

In asylum matters of Europe the poor practices travel easily from one country to another, whereas the good ones are not copied as eagerly. So far Finland has had a good legislation and practices in asylum matters, says the senior lawyer Marjaana Laine from Finnish Refugee Advice Centre. Change of political climate has reached Finland too and asylum laws have been tightened under a lot of political pressure. The lawyers at the Finnish Refugee Advice Centre struggle daily for fair asylum practices.

A seaport strike in March halted the country's economy and led to discussions on limiting the right the strike. Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen resigned in June and was replaced by Mari Kiviniemi, Finland's second female prime minister. Investigations into Vanhanen's involvement in distributing government funds to a nongovernmental organization that had contributed to his campaign were ongoing at year's end. Immigration became a dominant political topic in 2010 ahead of the April 2011 elections

On a visit to Helsinki, the UN's High Commissioner for Refugees has called on Finland to take in Libyan refugees, while praising its refugee system.
High Commissioner António Guterres expressed concern on Thursday about the flow of refugees from Syria into Turkey. Within the past day alone, more than 1,000 people have fled the city of Jisr al-Shoughhour over the Turkish border, he noted.

"I have faith in European solidarity and I'm sure that Finns share this as well," Guterres said, adding that the UN wants help from the EU countries, including Finland.

HELSINKI, Finland, May 25 (UNHCR) – The UN refugee agency has completed a unique and moving series of regional dialogues with women that began in India last November and wrapped up in Finland this week.

The seven dialogue meetings brought together hundreds of women in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas and were aimed at giving refugee women a voice and an opportunity to influence change during UNHCR's landmark 60th year.
