Yle election guru: Finns Party to win big in municipals

Yle election guru: Finns Party to win big in municipals | Finland | Scoop.it

Yle’s election analyst Sami Borg has predicted that the opposition Centre party and senior government partner the National Coalition will lose ground in the upcoming municipal election. The only party expected to increase its voter support is the anti-euro Finns Party. However Borg says the party’s biggest challenge will be finding suitable candidates for the poll.

Eurozone woes drive Finnish presidential campaign

Eurozone woes drive Finnish presidential campaign | Finland | Scoop.it

Finland's presidential candidates are locking horns over the eurozone crisis as the January 22 election looks set to reflect a surge in euroscepticism in one of Europe's top-rated economies.
"The dividing lines between the candidates follow the EU issue pretty closely," Helsinki University political science professor Tuomo Martikainen told AFP.
The eurozone slowdown brought on by the debt crisis is expected to hit Finland's export-reliant economy hard, with growth expected to slow to just 0.4 percent in 2012 and with Finns nervous about the future although unemployment is for the moment still comparatively low at 7.3 percent.
Finland's future in the eurozone and the wider EU has thus become a bone of contention as popular President Tarja Halonen prepares to leave office after her second term in office.

The Finnish "six pack" Joe state by Thanos Kalamidas

The Finnish "six pack" Joe state by Thanos Kalamidas | Finland | Scoop.it
Midsummer in Finland means cottage, lake, beer and makkara – the Finnish sausage – not necessary in this series. It means empty cities and packed lakes, it means singing and drinking and for this year it meant the end of a month long negotiation for a government with the “six pack” agreement. There is no sarcasm into the name and humour – especially self-sarcasm - is not one of the Finnish strongpoint. For the Finns “six pack” meant the agreement between six parties from a very wide political spectrum to form a coalition government keeping the “six pack” Joes of the extreme right, the True Finns out of the government.

Anti-euro Finns take backseat in presidential poll - Business Recorder (blog)

Anti-euro Finns take backseat in presidential poll - Business Recorder (blog) | Finland | Scoop.it

Finnish voters look set to elect veteran conservative Sauli Niinisto as their next president as anti-euro sentiment takes a backseat to economic concerns.

The former finance minister from the National Coalition party, with around 40 percent support in polls, is clear favourite for the January 22 election.

After the highly eurosceptic Finns Party emerged from obscurity to become the main opposition in April's general election - on a campaign opposing EU bailouts - some expected its leader Timo Soini to be a formidable presidential candidate.

But Soini is trailing with under 10 percent, according to latest media surveys, putting him behind at least one other presidential hopeful, Centre Party veteran Paavo Vayrynen...

COMMENTARY: Born out of angst – culture policy of The (True) Finns party - Helsingin Sanomat

Timo Soini, the chairman and presidential candidate of The Finns (also known as the True Finns) party, dropped a new bomb on Monday. He said that the denunciation of postmodern art in the party’s parliamentary election manifesto was an election trick aimed at annoying people who take things too seriously.
This means that according to Soini the sentence in the election programme, according to which The Finns feel that “maintaining the Finnish cultural heritage takes precedence over support for postmodern modern art” did not mean that art should be restricted in some way.
“It was a deliberate provocation. We knew that there would be an outcry”, Soini says now.

Why was this a new bombshell? It is because the party’s chairman is admitting that the party wrote things in its election programme that it did not mean.
Soini has worked very hard to get the True Finns to be taken seriously. But now Soini claims that the election programme of the party was actually meant to be a humourous publication.
Are the voters of the True Finns laughing now that it came out that this was a provocation and that it was not a real election programme? Or do they perhaps feel that they have been hoodwinked?

Most MPs of the True Finns joined party after 2003

print this

By Unto Hämäläinen

Two months ago, on October 11th, I sent the following e-mail to Members of Parliament of the True Finns*. “I am writing an extensive article about the True Finns, and in that connection I ask what year you became a member of the party. If you were once a member of the Finnish Rural Party, I request that you kindly mention it.”

...significant proportion of True Finns MPs are newcomers to politics. No less than 30 of them joined the party only a few years ago, and most of them do not have any significant experience in municipal politics.
They deviate clearly from the rest of Parliament. Of the new representatives of other parties, only a few are novices to such a degree.

True Finns: the New Largest Party | Finland | Scoop.it
After their failure to be included in a coalition government after their 'surprise' electoral success, the True Finns, a socially liberal but fiscally conservative party which campaigned almost entirely on an anti-bailout ticket have now accomplished the unthinkable; they, a Eurosceptic party according to mainstream European Union parties, have now displaced all other factions to become the single largest force in Finnish politics. That's according to YLE News, which says that their overall support has now reached almost a quarter of the national vote.
