Finland seems to have more music festivals than people

Finland seems to have more music festivals than people | Finland | Scoop.it

... Finland. It's a place with a small number of inhabitants spread across a land mass the size of France. But a surprising proportion of these little towns have world-class concert halls and distinguished music festivals that play in them. In fact, you wonder if there are more music festivals than people.

The Classical Reviewer: Why does Finland continue to produce so many fine composers? | Finland | Scoop.it
Why does Finland continue to produce so many fine composers?

Given the small and sparsely populated nature of the country, it wasn’t always the case that Finland had the opportunities for aspiring composers...

Listening To Music Lights Up The Whole Brain

Listening To Music Lights Up The Whole Brain | Finland | Scoop.it

Finnish researchers have developed a groundbreaking new method that allows to study how the brain processes different aspects of music, such as rhythm, tonality and timbre (sound color) in a realistic listening situation. The study is pioneering in that it for the first time reveals how wide networks in the brain, including areas responsible for motor actions, emotions, and creativity, are activated during music listening. The new method helps us understand better the complex dynamics of brain networks and the way music affects us.

Finnish Composer Salonen’s Violin Concerto Wins Grawemeyer Award

The 2012 Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition will go to Esa-Pekka Salonen’s “Violin Concerto.”

The 30-minute piece debuted in 2009. It is at times somber and at times raucous and discordant. Salonen also believes it is the first time a modern drum set has been incorporated into a violin concerto. Award director Marc Satterwhite makes special note of the piece’s closing chord, which does not reflect any of the previous music. Salonen says the departure was intentional.

Guns N' Roses Agrees: Finland's Metal Pioneer 'Michael Monroe' Rocks | Finland | Scoop.it
Matti Fagerholm, who goes by the name Michael Monroe, is perhaps the world's most respected yet least-famous rock star.

"He's a 50-year-old who's doing splits on stage," says Alexander Stubb, Finland's minister of foreign trade, who listens to Mr. Monroe's music on the treadmill. "Michael's always been different. He loves the success of others and doesn't see someone else's gain as his loss."

Superconductor: Concert Review: Finnish Tango Takes Manhattan

Superconductor: Concert Review: Finnish Tango Takes Manhattan | Finland | Scoop.it

In Finland, the tango caught on in the years following the Winter War with Russia. After fighting both Russian and German forces, the Finns needed a way to decompress. And they found it in slower versions of the tango, almost always in a sad minor key. The national obsession became a craze in the 1990s, with a yearly tango festival in the tiny town of Seinäjoki drawing thousands to dance and compete.

Week 6- Finnish Band HIM « Suomi- Ancient mythology, folklore and ... | Finland | Scoop.it

HIM is a Finnish rock band from Helsinki that began about 1991 with original line up of vocalist Ville Valo (who never really wanted to be a front man, he wanted to play drums). HIM is the first Finnish band to have a gold album in the .U.S.

There is a rumor going ’round that the guys are working on a new album as we speak. I can imagine so, considering how disappointed some of the band members seemed to be with the last record release.
