Russians bring revenue to Eastern Finland - but also arouse suspicions

Russians bring revenue to Eastern Finland - but also arouse suspicions | Finland | Scoop.it
The University of Eastern Finland studied what local residents think about eastern neighbours who rent cottages in the region

A chain-ferry comes ashore, but the queue of cars does not get moving, as apparently a Russian tourist’s SUV does not want to start. Well, naturally, what do you expect...
Hey, careful! Watch what you say! After all, Russian tourists bring money to Sulkava, a municipality suffering from migration loss.
Russians fill up the rental cottages in the off-season. They pick mushrooms and berries that would otherwise rot in the forests.
But it is rather difficult to get to know them. And, they aren't going to bring along any shady business practices with them, are they?

"Coming to Finland is like a destiny that meant to be. To live abroad is not part of my master plan but Finland has helped me to embrace the opportunities to see life on the other side of the globe.

Philippines will always be my home. It is where I learned my first steps, the place I grew up, and the starting point of my dreams. As my parents used to say “we brought you to life but it is YOU, who can fulfill your life and dreams.” And now, I am enjoying every step I have taken and every move I have made while living in Finland for almost a decade now."

Xenophobia and racism are the poverty of Finland today « Migrant Tales

By Enrique Tessieri
Some claim that ever-growing poverty and social inequality in Finland were the reasons why the Perussuomalaiset scored such a big election victory in April. We read in the media about ever-growing bread lines and how it has become more difficult for some people to make it through the month economically. Even so, does this justify growing xenophobia and racism in our society?
