Finns ready for Syria deployment already on Saturday - Helsingin Sanomat - International Edition - Foreign | Finland | Scoop.it
 Finland has agreed to send up to ten military observers to Syria if it gets a request from the United Nations. Eleven soldiers have been undergoing training at the Pori Brigade in Säkylä for the mission this week.
The soldiers are ready to go as soon as the training and equipping processes are over on Friday.
The group of international observers is to comprise 300 soldiers.

Finland has turned down two out of a total of 24 requests for transit of military equipment since 2000.
One of the two refusals involved the transport of attack submarines from Russia to China, and the other concerned the sale of Austrian sniper rifles to India.

Finnish and Swedish crisis management forces have probably inflicted casualties in clashes with rebels in Afghanistan, say the commanders of the forces in an interview with Helsingin Sanomat.
Finland and Sweden are a part of the NATO-led ISAF operation in Afghanistan. ISAF supports the Afghan army and police, which the Taleban rebels are fighting against.
“Our mission is to support Afghan forces and in fulfilling that mission we are involved in conflict situations in which we use deadly firepower, so there probably are victims on the other side; says Lieutenant Colonel Petri Kosonen, the commander of the Finnish forces.

The upgrade enables the launchers to fire precision GPS-guided munitions for the first time.

Finland to Begin Afghan Withdrawal Next Year « VOA Breaking News

Finland says it will begin withdrawing its forces from Afghanistan next year. The government said Tuesday that 50 of its 195 troops serving with the NATO-led force will return home in 2012.

 

All foreign combat troops are expected to leave Afghanistan by the end of 2014. International troops have already begun transferring security control of parts of Afghanistan to local forces.
The Finnish government says it will shift its focus to development and the training of Afghan forces. The country will also continue to take part in the European Union Police Mission in Afghanistan.

The Finnish minelayer Pohjanmaa returned to Finland on Monday, having completed its participation in the EU anti-piracy operation Atalanta by the coast of Somalia.
The Pohjanmaa set sail on operation Atalanta on January 5. The vessel, built in 1976, covered some 26,000 nautical miles per month without any technical problems. The ship spent 65 days at sea.

Lockheed upgrades rocket launchers - UPI.com

Lockheed Martin in Texas has received a $45.3 million contract to upgrade 22 Finnish Army M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System launchers.
"Finland has used MLRS products for four years, and the M270 launcher upgrade gives the Finnish army a modernized fire control system and new artillery options with GPS-enabled precision munitions," said Scott Arnold, vice president for Precision Fires at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control.

Units of the Defense Forces are carrying out exercises at the Kampi and Railway Station Metro stops on Tuesday and Wednesday and military personnel and equipment will be in evidence at both sites .
Head of Security for the South Finland Military District, First Lieutenant Jani Suojarinne told YLE that the exercises are taking place in underground areas on the same level as the city's Metro system.
"We'll be seeing armed troops in uniform at the stations and in the vicinity. There are armoured vehicles also taking part in the exercise," said Suojarinne.
