Life, Art, Words, by Boel Westin; Sculptor’s Daughter, by Tove Jansson - FT.com

Life, Art, Words, by Boel Westin; Sculptor’s Daughter, by Tove Jansson - FT.com | Finland | Scoop.it

How the author of the Moomin books created a children’s fantasy in tune with the postwar world

Sculptor’s Daughter tells us as much about Jansson’s formative years and the genesis of her most famous creation as any biography could, in succinct, dreamlike prose shot through with striking images and turns of phrase. Its themes are the consolations of home, the certainties of family relationships, the contentments of childhood – the same things that have kept the Moomins forging stoically on.

Tove Jansson: Life, Art, Words, by Boel Westin, translated by Silvester Mazzarella, Sort of Books, RRP£25, 528 pages

Scena Theatre imports ‘Purge’ by the ‘Gothic Finn,’ Sofi Oksanen | Finland | Scoop.it
In her disturbing play “Purge,” Sofi Oksanen explores the terror of the Soviet era.

Some of “Purge” is so disturbing that when Finnish playwright and novelist Sofi Oksanen read from it at the PEN festival in New York last year, she chose a love scene rather than risk a sleepless night for her audience.

Jane Garvey presents. Restorative justice; Mad Men's designer; author Sofi Oksanen.

Sofi Oksanen is a Finnish-Estonian novelist who’s been called a “literary Lady Gaga”. With her purple hair, gothic makeup and passionately feminist politics, the 34-year-old has a rock-star status at home and, like fellow Nordic writers Stieg Larsson and Hillary Mankell, has taken Scandinavian fiction to a mass international audience. Her breakthrough came with her latest book Purge, a dark tale of sex trafficking and abuse which has won a swathe of awards and become a global top 10 bestseller since it was published last year. She joins Jane to talk about why she chose her hard-hitting material and why the job of the writer is to make us witness what we don’t want to see.
Purge is published in paperback by Atlantic Books

Nadi.fi: Kalevala. The Song of ancestors

Nadi.fi: Kalevala. The Song of ancestors | Finland | Scoop.it
Mastered by desire impulsive,
By a mighty inward urging,
I am ready now for singing,
Ready to begin the chanting
Of our nation's ancient folk-song
Handed down from by-gone ages.
In my mouth the words are melting,
From my lips the tones are gliding,
From my tongue they wish to hasten;
When my willing teeth are parted,
When my ready mouth is opened,
Songs of ancient wit and wisdom
Hasten from me not unwilling.
