As many Russian as Swedish speakers by 2050? | Finland | Scoop.it

The Russian-speaking population of Finland has doubled in a decade and is expected to continue expanding at the same pace. The 100,000 mark is likely to be passed during the 2020's.

"If the proportion of Russian speakers among all immigrants remains the same, in 2050 they will number 200,000 to 240,000," calculates Director Ismo Söderling of the Institute of Migration.

Yale economist: Grammar behind Finnish frugality

Yale economist: Grammar behind Finnish frugality | Finland | Scoop.it

The lack of a future tense in the Finnish language not only makes Finns more frugal but also healthier than many other nations, reports the daily Turun Sanomat, citing a study by an American economics professor.

According to the Yale professor, grammatically separating the future and the present leads speakers to disassociate the future from the present. That said, Chen surmises that speakers of languages with separate future verb forms have saved 30 percent less by the time they retire.

Finding how to Finnish first - The Canberra Times

Finding how to Finnish first - The Canberra Times | Finland | Scoop.it
The facilities of most of the Finnish schools I saw were very average - every principal was desperate for more maintenance funding.

After visiting Finland in September 2011, seeing numerous primary and high schools in action, and talking to some bureaucrats, I was left with one overwhelming impression: ''They don't do anything very special here.'' But the students are all high achievers in the reading and writing of their native language; and in numeracy too. Why?

Why does Finnish give better PISA results?

Introduction

Ever since December 2001, when the results of the first PISA survey were made public, the Finnish educational system has received a lot of international attention. Foreign delegations are flocking to Finland, in the hope of discovering Finland's secrets.

The explanation widely accepted is that the Finnish educational system is better. For example, the following aspects have been pointed out: (cont.)

The Fascinating Finns

The Fascinating Finns | Finland | Scoop.it

Today we’re going to delve into some facts related to the interesting and singular Finnish language. Finnish is spoken mainly in Finland, as well as areas near Finland such as Sweden, Russia (in the Republic of Karelia), and is spoken by approximately 5 million native speakers. As many Europeans will note, despite Finland’s proximity to Russia and Scandinavian-speaking countries, Finnish is a very unique language in that it is very different from its surrounding languages. This stems from the fact that Finnish is a Uralic language, which finds its origins in the area near the Ural Mountains (the ‘’geographic’’ divide between European and Asian Russia/Siberia). Interestingly, other Uralic languages (also known as Finno-Ugric, derived from Proto-Uralic) include Hungarian and Estonian, so there are similarities to be found amongst the three, as well as among other less common languages derived from the same language family (Mari, Permic, Sami, Khanty, etc).
