There is concern in Finland about the decline of the Nordic welfare state and the return of a class society. Problems exist with regard to issues such as the country’s aging population, changes in the structure of the labour market, the increase in income disparity, and lifestyle issues. The impoverishment caused by the recession of the 1990s did not decrease in the early 2000s, as could be seen in things like the rise of bread lines, much debated by Finns.

The Finnish economy faces significant challenges in the decade ahead. Finland’s population is aging at the fastest rate in Europe, which is causing strain on its welfare model. As our pro-bono contribution to the discussion on the Finnish economy, we have sought to quantify the key challenges facing Finland in terms of jobs, labour and public sector productivity; and its opportunities to respond to these. Our most important message is that Finland should now quickly move to execution mode to solve the challenges ahead.

Over ten per cent of jobs in the corporate sector disappear annually, according to the report, but new positions open up to replace them at the same rate. This development has continued for some 40 years, excluding the 1990s depression years.

EVA explained that this 'creative destruction' is necessary in order for innovation and technological development to become production growth. Due to this, employers should be encourages to think about creating new positions, rather than protecting current jobs.

Finnish trade unions and employers organizations on Monday signed a two-year labor contract that raises wages by some 4.3 percent for more than 2 million people, or 94 percent of the country's working population.

 

Finnish Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen described the deal as "historic," saying that stability in the labor market was crucial in the current European financial crisis, especially for Finland's highly export-dependent economy.

Many immigrants work in the Helsinki region, where they are often on temporary jobs.

Berry pickers from Asia and the former Soviet Union are expected to flock to rural areas in the summer. Other types of seasonal agricultural work are also on offer.
