If in doubt, innovate - The Nordic region is becoming a hothouse of entrepreneurship

If in doubt, innovate - The Nordic region is becoming a hothouse of entrepreneurship | Finland | Scoop.it

IN 2010 A GROUP of students at Aalto University, just outside Helsinki, embarked on the most constructive piece of student activism in the history of the genre. They had been converted to the power of entrepreneurialism during a visit to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. When they got home they organised a “summer of start-ups” to spread the word that Finland’s future lay with new companies, not old giants. The summer of start-ups turned into a season of innovation.

Inside Finland's innovation camp for sustainable consumer behavior change

Inside Finland's innovation camp for sustainable consumer behavior change | Finland | Scoop.it

Energy grid unification is under way throughout Europe. The goal is to link together the supply of, and demand for, energy throughout the European Union. For a country like Finland, grid unification will mean higher energy prices. Higher energy prices will tax consumers' ability to spend. And put manufacturers' margins under pressure. With progress comes pain.

Finland's leaders are starting to see the future. The country must reduce its consumption of energy. It wants to become a services economy. It wants to solve a perplexing riddle: how can a country grow for its citizens in an era of resource scarcity? The Finns understand that now is the time for change... http://www.guardian.co.uk/sustainable-business/finland-energy-innovation-behaviour?newsfeed=true

Nokia HumanForm: here’s somefin that’ll amaze you | Nokia

Nokia HumanForm: here’s somefin that’ll amaze you | Nokia | Finland | Scoop.it

It looks like a creature which has just reached the next rung of the evolutionary ladder. A baby jellyfish that somehow managed to flip itself up the beach out of the sea, instinctively searching for the next environment to sustain its ultimate metamorphosis into a sentient being.

When lights inside it start flashing and images appear on its skin, I want to reach for a pitchfork and round up a mob of angry peasants to help me chase it back to the depths of the ocean.

But then I hear a familiar ringtone, di de le de, di de le de, di de le de, der.

A man in a white lab coat, who – incidentally – invented Bluetooth, picks it up and hands it to me.

“It’s for you,” he says.

Tentatively, I put it to my ear, fearing I will end up with ectoplasm on my sideburns.

But it feels warm and instantly moulds to my ear. I don’t have to press anything to answer. The Hi-Def voice on the line is editor-in-chief Heidi who invited me to Finland to show me something special.

Now watch this amazing video of the Kinetic phone, which gives a whole new meaning to the bendy phone.

Helsinki seems like a dream to me now | brian s hall

NextWeb looks at start-ups formed by those who's past life took place at Nokia. A long read, but worth it:
Nokia has traditionally taken a lot of the talent out of the market – it’s a brain-drain...

Peter Vesterbacka of Angy Birds fame was recently quoted as saying that the freeing-up of Nokia’s talent was one of the best situations ever. “We’re finally getting out of that cycle, where everything revolves around Nokia,” he said.

EpiCrystals sets sights on green laser ramp

EpiCrystals sets sights on green laser ramp | Finland | Scoop.it
Finnish company sees large market opportunity for high-efficiency 532nm source based on a frequency-doubled GaAs chip.
Despite expectations of rapid growth in recent years, the market for handheld devices capable of projecting high-definition photos, films and presentations onto virtually any surface, is yet to take off. A major part of the reason for that is the difficulty associated with developing and manufacturing a suitable and affordable green source – in the form of either an LED or a laser...

Finland leads the way in high-tech innovation

Finland leads the way in high-tech innovation | Finland | Scoop.it

People from other countries often ask: “How is it possible that Finland, a small country, is able to cover such a wide field of innovations?”

One of the answers may be that they really care– as individuals, companies, universities, institutions and government.

The newly published book, The Finnish Miracle, by Canadian-born André Noël Chaker, who has lived in Finland for 20 years, describes the Path of Possibilities, a success model founded on Finnishness. To Chaker, the strengths of Finnishness include solution- centred thinking, adherence to rules, closeness to nature, a good education system, competitiveness, security, openness, equality and minimal hierarchy.

The various stages of the success model Chaker has structured on Finnishness include an open mind, trial and error, working harder and smarter and, of course, having Finnish sisu, or grit...

This is a possibility of a successful innovation. According to this article, the success of a group of people or even a ountry depends on many things. Firstly, every part must do their best to finish their jobs. Then they have to cooperate with each other and communicate to discuss about the issue. Next, a good leader is crutial. He must be far-sighted and able to handle this work. They will make many mistakes and faults. However, they cannot give up but keep on working till the final success.
