Why Finnish babies sleep in boxes

Why Finnish babies sleep in boxes | Finland | Scoop.it
For 75 years, Finland's expectant mothers have been given a box of baby clothes and bedding by the state. Some say it helped Finland achieve one of the world's lowest infant mortality rates.

It's a tradition that dates back to the 1930s and it's designed to give all children in Finland, no matter what background they're from, an equal start in life. The maternity package - a gift from the government - is available to all expectant mothers.

Ulla M. Saikku's insight:

The contents of the box is more than welcome but I personally have never seen anyone using the actual box as baby's first bed. (U-M Saikku)

Finding health literacy: June 2011 | Finland | Scoop.it
This blog will record my journey through the US, Canada and Europe in search of best practice in consumer health literacy.

Turku - Finland

At this conference, I was struck by how many of the health professionals, particularly the clinicians, had developed their interest in health promotion. It really was like a bolt from the blue, like they had suddenly started listening to their patients and realised that there was something wrong with the way that healthcare was being delivered. The classic “aha” moment, where the pieces all fall into place .

Only 65 percent of the wards surveyed reached 'minimum' levels of caretaking personnel, and only 13 percent of the wards received a ‘good’ rating.

Finnish doctors' network wants Kela to cover nicotine gum | Finland | Scoop.it

Nicotine gum and other medication to deal with tobacco withdrawal should be covered by the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela), according to a statement on Wednesday by Finland’s Doctors Against Tobacco (DAT) network.

According to Olli Simonen, chairman of DAT, Kela should cover nicotine withdrawal treatments because nicotine and tobacco addictions are recognised illnesses, not voluntary habits. Both have been included in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD).

Despite the recessionary economic climate in Europe, and lack of capacity in Private Care homes in Scandinavia, the rising rents have had little impact to prevent the demands surpassing the supply.

Pardon My Finnish

Pardon My Finnish | Finland | Scoop.it
A new post on "Pardon My Finnish": "The biggest disease of them all is the growing income inequality” http://blog.finnish-institute.org.uk/...

At the conference it also became evident that the Finnish healthcare system needs reform.
