Helsinki’s year as World Design Capital – which it shares with three other southern Finnish cities – may seem like a vague idea. No wonder, as its more than 300 events range from sports to gardening, mass transit to lettering styles.

City guide: stylish Helsinki

City guide: stylish Helsinki | Finland | Scoop.it
Finland's capital is a design-lover's paradise and has been crowned World Design Capital thanks to its hip eating spots, vintage stores and boutique hotels.

For a small city, Helsinki is really rather grand. Built around the broad sweep of the Gulf of Finland, where ships of all sizes sail by, its wide streets are lined by commanding architecture, ranging from stunning neo-classical, to gorgeous Art Deco, to the glories of Alvar Aalto's Modernism, and interspersed with beautifully manicured parks...http://www.bahighlife.com/Destinations/City-guide-stylish-Helsinki.html

Diane, A Shaded View on Fashion: FIRST TIME IN HELSINKI - TEXT BY PHILIPPE POURHASHEMI

Diane, A Shaded View on Fashion: FIRST TIME IN HELSINKI - TEXT BY PHILIPPE POURHASHEMI | Finland | Scoop.it

Dear Shaded Viewers,

This is my first trip to Finland and I arrived yesterday afternoon. The city is beautiful and the mood seems relaxed. Helsinki is this year's World Design Capital and several fashion events have been organized to showcase what Finnish designers and companies have to offer. I'm staying at Hotel Fabian, which is stylish and comfortable. My room feels quite Scandinavian and luxurious.

I will soon report on a visit to Marimekko's headquarters, which I really enjoyed. Helsinki comes across as a peaceful and innovative place, where creativity and imagination are highly valued. Best, Philippe http://wdchelsinki2012.fi/en

Helsinki is different by design

Helsinki is different by design | Finland | Scoop.it
Design, the Finns like to say, is embedded in everyday life. Or at least it is here.

For those who appreciate innovative design, Helsinki is a perfect destination. And this year is a particularly good time to visit, as the city has been selected World Design Capital 2012. Many events are planned but whether you visit this year or later, there are lots of design-oriented attractions to explore.

Finland's Marimekko is a bright spot in 20th-century design - The National

Finland's Marimekko is a bright spot in 20th-century design - The National | Finland | Scoop.it
The Finnish company, known for bold floral and geometric shapes, celebrates the centennial of its founder, Armi Ratia, this year.

At the start of her career, the textile artist Armi Ratia said: "One has to dream. And one must stand out from the rest." The woman who founded Finland's famous design company, Marimekko, in 1951, certainly did both.

Known for its prints and cheerful designs, Marimekko has been described as one of the greatest success stories in the history of 20th-century design. Even if you don't necessarily know the brand by name, you'll know its signature look: big, bold, simple floral and geometric prints that find their way onto cushions, linens and ceramics.

The beautiful Arabia factory in Helsinki, World Design Capital 2012

The beautiful Arabia factory in Helsinki, World Design Capital 2012 | Finland | Scoop.it

Design in Finland is truly democratic. Just as I might place ‘design’ items on a pedestal, regular Fins expect them to be part of their everyday lives. We ate in all manner of cafes and restaurants and every time we lifted up a fork or a plate to check, there was the name Iitalla or Arabia. Made in Finland and used in Finland. We had a very interesting conversation with Pekka Timonen, director of the World Design Capital, who pointed out that Finland is only 200 years old and has never had a monarchy, so well-designed items haven’t filtered down from the aristocracy or mean to say something about your wealth or status. Sounds lovely...

Designer Airport | Home Away From Home

Designer Airport | Home Away From Home | Finland | Scoop.it

Helsinki’s Vantaa airport is taking the saying ‘making yourself at home’ to heart with the interior design for their newest travellers’ lounge. No matter how hard airport designers try to make these international, heavy trafficked areas romantic and luxurious, there is no doubting the dread that most of us feel on a 6 hour lay over or extended visit.
While there can be no denying the luxuriousness of this interiorly designed space, what the designers have cleverly done is steer away from the clinical coolness of traditional airport lounges and thrown a knowing look back towards creature comforts. The aptly named ‘Almost @ home’ lounge features interior aspects that have been chosen to most correctly reflect a Finnish, or any, home.
