Why Scandinavian Prisons Are Superior

Why Scandinavian Prisons Are Superior | Finland | Scoop.it

It’s a postcard-perfect day on Suomenlinna Island, in Helsinki’s South Harbor. Warm for the first week of June, day trippers mix with Russian, Dutch, and Chinese tourists sporting sun shades and carrying cones of pink ice cream.

Gunman Opens Fire at Finnish School

Gunman Opens Fire at Finnish School | Finland | Scoop.it

A gunman was arrested after firing several shots at a school in southern Finland, but no one was injured in the incident, police said.

Earlier Friday, a man was injured in a shooting incident in the town, Mr. Kinnunen said, but couldn't confirm if the incidents were related.

Finland has seen two deadly school shootings in recent years. In 2008, a culinary student killed nine fellow students and a teacher before shooting himself at a vocational school in Kauhajoki, western Finland.

A year earlier, an 18-year-old killed six fellow students, a nurse and the principal at a high school in Tuusula, about 50 kilometers north of Helsinki, before shooting himself.

After the attacks, authorities applied several measures to improve safety at schools, including the installation of monitoring cameras, lockable doors for all classrooms and training staff to deal with shootings.

16/06/2011 - Communiqué, June 13th.
With this communiqué we claim responsibility for the railway sabotage directed at a rail security electronics installation at Rekola in Vantaa. For this action we only needed a crowbar, some toilet paper, a few canisters of gasoline and a light. We broke in through the door and used toilet paper soaked in lighter fluid as a fuse, so we could flee the scene in peace before the arrival of the police and the fire department.

Police investigate anarchist website claim of responsibility for bomb and firebomb

Islamist blogger previously cheered actions.

Police in Helsinki are investigating whether or not Finnish anarchists had anything to do with the unexploded bomb that was found in Pasila on Friday.
A message appeared on a pro-anarchist website on Monday claiming responsibility for the canister bomb. Police say that the message included information that had not been revealed in public before.
However, police say that the information would have been available to people other than the perpetrator, because the canister had been left in a conspicuous location before anyone reported it to the police.
