Legally mandated broadband capacity could be raised to 10 Mbit nationwide
Auction for 4G network licence next year

 

The overall service requirement for nation wide broadband services could rise from the present one megabit to 10 megabits.

Minister of Transport and Communications Krista Kiuru (SDP) says that the matter will be discussed in connection with proposed changes to broadband legislation during this government term.

Finns lead world in broadband access

Finns lead world in broadband access | Finland | Scoop.it

While universal broadband access is a goal being sought by many developed countries, including Canada, it's the law in Finland.

"Citizens without access to broadband services cannot take advantage of information society services," said Suvi Linden, former minister of communications in Finland who authored the groundbreaking legislation which passed July 1, 2010.

"It is no longer a luxury product but a necessary tool for everyday life," said Linden, now a member of a United Nations broadband commission.

Finland has become the first country in the world to adopt
broadband as a legal right for all its citizens. From today, a universal
service obligation (USO) comes in to force which will see every Finn have the right to access the Internet through a 1Mbps broadband connection. 96% of the 5.2m strong country are believed to already be online.
