Taking the Finnish rest cure - Boston Globe

Taking the Finnish rest cure - Boston Globe | Finland | Scoop.it
Summer in Finland is a brief, perfect moment made of a soothing sun that shines well into the night, scudding white and purple clouds, and birches and evergreens tossing in a lilting breeze. From the moment the sun begins its ascent into the sky in May, Finns escape to their cottages, retreats handed down through generations.

During our several visits to Finland, many of them artist residencies, we often ecountered friends and acquaintances on a Friday afternoon outside the market, where, pausing to stock up on essentials, they murmured something about hurrying off to the mökki, rustic cottages outfitted with wood-burning saunas. In early spring we had sailed through the iced archipelago between Helsinki and Stockholm, admiring the red and brown wood cottages dotting the myriad islands. But even more lay just a few hours away to the north, in the wonders of the lake region in a country lousy with lakes — 187,000 to be exact.

"My Romance in Finland

About a month later, I was in Helsinki, Finland. I met a beautiful girl named Milla.

When she found out that I had never been to a sauna, she demanded I meet her in her small hometown in the middle of the Lake District in Finland. Traditional Finnish Saunas are very important in Finnish culture.

Well a few days later I met her in her hometown. We drove to a lake together, and got out of the car. She approached an old, overturned rowboat. “Can you help me flip it?” she must have noticed the confused look on my face because she smiled and said, “We have to row there...”

Diane, A Shaded View on Fashion: FIRST TIME IN HELSINKI - TEXT BY PHILIPPE POURHASHEMI

Diane, A Shaded View on Fashion: FIRST TIME IN HELSINKI - TEXT BY PHILIPPE POURHASHEMI | Finland | Scoop.it

Dear Shaded Viewers,

This is my first trip to Finland and I arrived yesterday afternoon. The city is beautiful and the mood seems relaxed. Helsinki is this year's World Design Capital and several fashion events have been organized to showcase what Finnish designers and companies have to offer. I'm staying at Hotel Fabian, which is stylish and comfortable. My room feels quite Scandinavian and luxurious.

I will soon report on a visit to Marimekko's headquarters, which I really enjoyed. Helsinki comes across as a peaceful and innovative place, where creativity and imagination are highly valued. Best, Philippe http://wdchelsinki2012.fi/en

Teresa Flavin: Week Two at HIAP/Suomenlinna, Helsinki - Creative Futures -Blog | Finland | Scoop.it

There are signs of spring this week, as the island goes through its freeze/thaw cycle.. On Monday local people began to appear with rakes, gathering up the gravel that had coated frozen pavements and roads. There were curious "dances" performed by facing pairs of tractor-like machines: one would move the gravel forwards using rolling brushes and the other would scoop it up. By Friday, the now ice-free paths were as pristine as if there had never been winter...

Tallinn, Estonia & the Drunk Ferry to Helsinki

Tallinn, Estonia & the Drunk Ferry to Helsinki | Finland | Scoop.it

It was a short adventure in Tallinn, as we had tickets for the 9 p.m. drunk ferry to Helsinki. But, that did not stop us from exploring the Christmas markets and eating at the BEST rated restaurant in Tallinn--no joke.

The alcohol is obviously less expensive in Tallinn and so Finns make the mad dash across the pond to buy their goods. Luckily, we were upwind from the loud, obnoxious (and yes, drunk) teenagers who decided to party in our cozy location on the ferry.

Ah, it's nice to be back in Finland!
