Finns reject Guggenheim gallery plan

Finns reject Guggenheim gallery plan | Finland | Scoop.it

Helsinki has rejected a proposal to build a €140m (£114m) Guggenheim museum on the Finnish capital's waterfront, a notice on the city's website said .

The Helsinki city board, a vetting committee of 15 municipal politicians selected to consider proposals for the Helsinki city council, voted eight to seven against putting the Guggenheim project forward for the council's consideration.

"The city board rejects the project," it said on the municipal website on Wednesday under the heading "Decision bulletin no 17".

Finnish media said the project was voted down over worries about governance and that it would be too costly. The decision comes amid government budget cuts to contend with a debt crisis.

Referendum By Facebook: Finns “Like” or “Dislike” Guggenheim Helsinki

Referendum By Facebook: Finns “Like” or “Dislike” Guggenheim Helsinki | Finland | Scoop.it
One of the quickest ways to see whether an idea has legs or not is to float it on Facebook and see how many people click the Like button.

A project that would import a branch of the Guggenheim museum in Finland has been the subject of debate ever since the estimated $184M proposal was announced last year. Now the public has a chance to weigh in via interactive touchscreens situated in two public transportation hubs around Helsinki. Unlike Facebook, however, these kiosks also have a Dislike button, giving the opposition a fighting chance to be heard.

New Perspectives on the Greatest Finnish Composer of All Time | SmashyEvent | Finland | Scoop.it

The Bard Music Festival is featuring composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) this year. Perhaps no twentieth-century composer has provoked a more varied reaction among the music-loving public than Jean Sibelius. Originally hailed as a new Beethoven by much of the Anglo-Saxon world, he was also widely disparaged by critics more receptive to newer trends in music.

AATSINKI: The Story of Arctic Cowboys

One year in the life of a family of reindeer herders in Finnish Lapland reveals an intricate bond between man and nature.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

To my friends, old and new,

As many of you know, I have spent the last year living with and filming a family of reindeer herders in Finnish Lapland, well above the Arctic Circle near the small town of Salla. In November 2011, I completed the last of six shoots and began editing a documentary about their amazing lives called AATSINKI. Making this film has been a labor of love for me, but I’ve gone as far as I can on my own – now I need your help...

Welcome to Moominvalley

Welcome to Moominvalley | Finland | Scoop.it

Tampere Art Museum Moominvalley is a museum devoted to original works by writer and artist Tove Jansson. Its unique collections comprise around 2000 works.

The museum is based on the Moomin books by Tove Jansson. So far, they have been translated into over 40 languages. The books fascinate adults and children alike. The original Moomin illustrations by Tove Jansson are an essential part of the atmosphere of the museum, and the three-dimensional tableaux built by Tuulikki Pietilä add to our own picture of the goings-on in the Moomin stories. The gem of the collection is a blue five-storey Moomin House that is as exceptional as its residents — and its builders, Tuulikki Pietilä, Pentti Eistola and Tove Jansson.

When objects become old, used or obsolete, it is our nature to toss them aside as garbage. However, French artist Elise Morin and architect Clémence Eliard as well as Finnish artist Miina Äkkijyrkkä are giving new artistic life to these discarded items.

Helsinki based Miina Äkkijyrkkä’s metal and bronze sculptures reflect the small rural life she experienced dairy farming in Finland. She creates massive metal sculptures of cows using various metals.
