University World News - SCANDINAVIA: Private funding key to autonomy drive

Scandinavian model of higher education as a public good is now under pressure from market-driven higher education and austerity measures brought in to tackle the economic downturn.

In the face of these pressures, can private funding fill the funding gap in the coming years?

 

 In Finland, Aalto university was established in July 2010 from a merger between Helsinki University of Technology, the Helsinki School of Economics and the University of Arts and Design in the city. Today, Aalto university has 20,000 students, a EUR400 million (US$509 million) budget and participates in 12 centres of excellence.

Five Finnish universities make world’s top 500 list | Finland | Scoop.it

Five Finnish universities made it into the top 500 universities on the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) list published on Monday by the Shanghai Jiaotong University.

The University of Helsinki ranked the highest of Finnish universities in 74th place. The universities of Oulu, Turku, Jyväskylä and Itä-Suomi also made it onto the list.
