Finnish voters snub anti-euro far-right

Finnish voters snub anti-euro far-right | Finland | Scoop.it

Finland's nationalist anti-immigration Finns Party suffered a heavy setback in this weekend's presidential election, as many of its anti-euro voters fled to the equally eurosceptic Centre Party, observers said Monday.
The Finns Party soared in popularity in last April's legislative elections, becoming the third-biggest political formation with 19 percent of votes as its vehemently anti-EU rhetoric drew voters away from the Centre Party, which struggled to convey its euro opposition.
But in Sunday's first round of presidential voting, the Finns Party candidate and leader, the charismatic and popular Timo Soini, managed to scrape up just 9.4 percent despite a campaign that focused heavily on Finland's role in the eurozone.

The question that exposed Timo Soini’s good-cop-bad-cop strategy on racism - Blog

 By Enrique Tessieri
The televised presidential debate on Thursday is probably one of the first times when Perussuomalaiset (PS) party chairman Timo Soini good-cop-bad-cop was uncovered to the tee. His usual response, “I don’t support racism and hate speech,” didn’t work because it was unconvincing and even had a grotesque quality.

COMMENTARY: Born out of angst – culture policy of The (True) Finns party - Helsingin Sanomat

Timo Soini, the chairman and presidential candidate of The Finns (also known as the True Finns) party, dropped a new bomb on Monday. He said that the denunciation of postmodern art in the party’s parliamentary election manifesto was an election trick aimed at annoying people who take things too seriously.
This means that according to Soini the sentence in the election programme, according to which The Finns feel that “maintaining the Finnish cultural heritage takes precedence over support for postmodern modern art” did not mean that art should be restricted in some way.
“It was a deliberate provocation. We knew that there would be an outcry”, Soini says now.

Why was this a new bombshell? It is because the party’s chairman is admitting that the party wrote things in its election programme that it did not mean.
Soini has worked very hard to get the True Finns to be taken seriously. But now Soini claims that the election programme of the party was actually meant to be a humourous publication.
Are the voters of the True Finns laughing now that it came out that this was a provocation and that it was not a real election programme? Or do they perhaps feel that they have been hoodwinked?

Finns' party denies Independence ball boycott | Finland | Scoop.it

The Finns’ party’s parliamentary group leader, Pirkko Ruohonen-Lerner, does not believe that there will be a revolt by her party's MPs against the
Independence Day ball at the presidential palace.

On Wednesday, Finns’ party MP Pentti Oinonen told the tabloid Iltalehti that he would not attend the ball because he was disappointed more war veterans and ordinary people were not invited.
He also said that gay people dancing at the party offended him, later clarifying that his attitude to gay couples stemmed from his religious convictions.

The European Council on Foreign Relations | True Europeans now need a 'Plan B' | Finland | Scoop.it
As integration has turned into disintegration, the role of the European political establishment was also reversed, from spearheading further unification to defending the status quo. As a result, anyone who considers the status quo undesirable, unacceptable or unsustainable has had to take an anti-European stance. And, as heavily indebted countries are pushed towards insolvency, the number of the disaffected continues to grow, together with support for anti-European parties such as True Finns in Finland

True Finns: the New Largest Party

True Finns: the New Largest Party | Finland | Scoop.it
After their failure to be included in a coalition government after their 'surprise' electoral success, the True Finns, a socially liberal but fiscally conservative party which campaigned almost entirely on an anti-bailout ticket have now accomplished the unthinkable; they, a Eurosceptic party according to mainstream European Union parties, have now displaced all other factions to become the single largest force in Finnish politics. That's according to YLE News, which says that their overall support has now reached almost a quarter of the national vote.

New Finnish Government Could Reshape EU Neighborhood Policy « Russian News From Russia | Finland | Scoop.it
Finland has finally announced its new six-party coalition government after months of negotiations.
The Euroskeptic True Finns party, which had threatened to veto bail-outs for the Eurozone’s struggling economies, was left out but two appointments to the new government might nonetheless have an impact on how the European Union is run. Or at least shape Brussels’ activities in its eastern neighborhood.

A win for the euro - Economist

A win for the euro - Economist | Finland | Scoop.it

THOSE who argued that Finland is fast becoming a Eurosceptic country that is against the country's membership of the European single currency, the euro, have been proved wrong by its presidential election. The run-off on February 5th was contested between the two most pro-European candidates. Timo Soini, leader of the anti-euro True Finns, which took a spectacular 18% of the vote in the general election last April, was humiliatingly pushed out in the first round. The winner, Sauli Niinisto, a former centre-right finance minister, took 63% of the vote to 37% for the loser, Pekka Haavisto of the Greens (who was also the first openly gay candidate for the post).

Finland’s Euro-Skeptics Gird for Voter Backlash

Less than a year after Timo Soini led his anti-euro “The Finns” party in a fourfold surge in Finland’s parliamentary election, voters are showing they won’t reward candidates running on a bailout-bashing agenda.

Polls show Soini may place fourth in the Jan. 22 presidential election, trailing Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen’s National Coalition candidate Sauli Niinistoe, a former banker and finance minister who led Finland into the euro in 1999.

Anti-euro Finns take backseat in presidential poll - Business Recorder (blog)

Anti-euro Finns take backseat in presidential poll - Business Recorder (blog) | Finland | Scoop.it

Finnish voters look set to elect veteran conservative Sauli Niinisto as their next president as anti-euro sentiment takes a backseat to economic concerns.

The former finance minister from the National Coalition party, with around 40 percent support in polls, is clear favourite for the January 22 election.

After the highly eurosceptic Finns Party emerged from obscurity to become the main opposition in April's general election - on a campaign opposing EU bailouts - some expected its leader Timo Soini to be a formidable presidential candidate.

But Soini is trailing with under 10 percent, according to latest media surveys, putting him behind at least one other presidential hopeful, Centre Party veteran Paavo Vayrynen...

Most MPs of the True Finns joined party after 2003

print this

By Unto Hämäläinen

Two months ago, on October 11th, I sent the following e-mail to Members of Parliament of the True Finns*. “I am writing an extensive article about the True Finns, and in that connection I ask what year you became a member of the party. If you were once a member of the Finnish Rural Party, I request that you kindly mention it.”

...significant proportion of True Finns MPs are newcomers to politics. No less than 30 of them joined the party only a few years ago, and most of them do not have any significant experience in municipal politics.
They deviate clearly from the rest of Parliament. Of the new representatives of other parties, only a few are novices to such a degree.

Timo Soini's conversation ranges from Moses to Millwall FC as he reiterates his opposition to the euro...

Soini, 49, is arguably the most successful eurosceptic politician in Europe today, and certainly in the eurozone.

Earlier this year, when his True Finns party refused to back the bailout of Portugal, this bear of a man (he's 18 stone and 6ft 2in) had the world's attention. "The Finns party made a huge impact last spring all over Europe," he remembers with satisfaction. "The Portuguese bailout was on the hook for nearly one-and-a-half months because of us."

“We felt unanimously that a warning is the right punishment. He has been reprimanded before”, said the party’s group chair Pirkko Ruohonen-Lerner.

Why You Might Want To Take a Glance at Finland

Why You Might Want To Take a Glance at Finland | Finland | Scoop.it
Harnessing public opposition to bailing out their less prudent neighbours, the ‘ True Finns’ party surged from nowhere to 3rd place with 19.1% of the vote. This, combined with the collapse of the ‘Centre Party’, meant that the usual options of a centre-right or centre-left government were impossible. The True Finns refused to join any coalition which agreed to contribute to the bailouts of Greece and Portugal. If they got their way there was nothing the EU could seriously do about it, the bailouts would have gone on regardless, but Finland wouldn’t pay a penny, meaning every other country’s contribution would go up. All across Europe electorates would see that there is an alternative and that voting Eurosceptic could achieve tangible results. The European project would have been thrown into jeopardy.
