Nokia Connects | Silicon Suomi: Why Nokia’s right to call Finland home

Nokia Connects | Silicon Suomi: Why Nokia’s right to call Finland home | Finland | Scoop.it
Ever since Stephen Elop, the first non Finnish CEO, took over at Nokia there’s been speculation that Nokia should move its headquarters to Silicon Valley. In some North American journalists’ eyes, Suomi, (the Finnish name for Finland) is a godforsaken backwater, a place famous only for saunas, ice swimming and a president who looks like Conan O’Brien. But, there’s some very good reasons why Stephen Elop recently said Nokia’s headquarters would stay in Espoo. And they’ve got nothing to do with his love of ice hockey.

The burden also on your shoulders is not an easy one - making Nokia great again would be one of the most legendary turnarounds in modern industrial history. And I totally support the decision to phase out Symbian and place a bet on WinPhone instead. Anyone who dares to defy that should use the N97 mini for a week or two...

Why Nokia’s Elop Is Wrong About Mobile Sales - Business Insider

Why Nokia’s Elop Is Wrong About Mobile Sales - Business Insider | Finland | Scoop.it
Users aren’t idiots.... They buy use cases, not hardware.
Here is a hint. Recently Finland’s “Y Combinator” came and visited me. They call it Startup Sauna. Not a single one of those companies showed me a Windows Phone 7 app. Not a single one, and these are Europe’s best developers from Nokia’s backyard. You should have heard what they said off camera. It was stunning. They are betting their companies on iOS and Android and if you care about the apps these startups are showing off, that’s the platforms consumers will bet on too. Unless you think they are idiots.

Nokia’s CEO, Stephen Elop, still isn’t quite understanding why Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 isn’t selling. He thinks it’s about hardware.

Communities Dominate Brands: Deluded? Seriously? Can I really honestly claim that Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop is deluded? Unfortunately.. yes.

Guys, this is a bit different. First, lets be clear. Delusional. I am serious.

This is part 3 of my trilogy on Nokia profit warning. Part 1 examined the impact of the profit warning to Nokia 2011 sales and profits. Part 2 pondered the bizarre timing of the announcement of the Microsoft partnership, while Nokia didn't have phones to offer. And now this is Part 3, the climax. Is Elop Delusional.

Nokia goes from designed in Finland to designed in California in two years http://bit.ly/lBafRJ...

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop appeared on CNBC yesterday, and during the interview he squashed all rumors about a possible sale of his company’s mobile division to Microsoft. But aside from that, he had a few other interesting things to say.

One of those things is that Nokia’s first Windows Phones “are being designed and put together in California, with the US market very much in mind”.

Okay, so having the US market in mind is a pretty decent thing to do especially for Nokia which seems not to have had the US in mind for many many years. And considering that Windows Phone 7 is a US-born OS, again that makes perfect sense. Nokia will probably even start working with the US carriers, something it has always hated doing, and it will bring some WP7 devices to market there. Fine.

The first part of that sentence though is just plain funny. I mean remember the Nokia N900 and its “Designed in Finland” cheap jab at Apple? Oh my.

and said that the Finnish company would eventually enter the market for tablet computers.

Speaking at D9: All Things Digital, Mr. Elop said that Nokia is engaged in a “platform war” with Apple Inc. and Google Inc. for mobile devices, and that using Windows Phone 7 software will enable Nokia to differentiate its products. He added that “both companies will reduce expense and increase profit because of this deal. It is a positive thing fundamentally because consumers will buy more devices from Nokia.”

Nokia CEO on MeeGo: There's No Turning Back

Nokia just gave us a look at their new N9 running MeeGo. It looks great, except that it's dead on arrival. But just in case you were unsure about Nokia's future plans, CEO Stephen Elop basically confirmed it's all over.

In an interview with Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, the Nokia headman and former Microsoft executive stated that, even if the N9 turns out to be a hit, Nokia's energies will be spent on Windows Phone technology. The troubled company will also focus on developing software to make their phones stand out in the handset market, echoing sentiments he expressed back in February. Good luck you guys.

Nokia's reorganization is creating ripples in the industry, hurting suppliers, shareholders, and other investors. Can CEO Elop hang on?

Simply put, while weakness at Nokia has been very apparent in the marketplace, no one anticipated that custom baseband would be down 53 percent in the span of two quarters, especially given expectations that Nokia units would decline 22 percent in the same period.

Nokia doesn’t have a Plan B ready in case Windows Phone fails » Unwired View | Finland | Scoop.it
While being interviewed on CNBC yesterday, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop was asked what Nokia’s ‘Plan B’ is, what it expects to do in case Windows Phone 7 doesn’t take off, or if Nokia’s WP7 devices won’t sell well. A pretty reasonable question, but one that got a pretty troubling answer.

Elop said: “Plan B is to make sure that Plan A is very successful”. Obviously, if there was a Plan B discussed internally, Elop wouldn’t say what it was on television, not now before any WP7 Nokia devices even shipped. Doing that would totally undermine Nokia’s WP7 strategy.

Market share dwindling, stock cratering, persistent takeover talk. How the CEO is trying to lead Nokia past its epic fail.
