A City Guide to Helsinki, Finland - Something For Everyone | We Are Traveller

A City Guide to Helsinki, Finland - Something For Everyone | We Are Traveller | Finland | Scoop.it

Helsinki is a city full of glorious extremes; golden summer days that last for more than 19 hours and crisp winter air which can reach -10. However, whichever season you choose to experience in Finland you can be sure of a magical time.

The capital of Finland, Helsinki nestles deep into the southern coastline and as well as offering visitors a bustling metropolis, it also stretches across numerous bays, peninsulas and islands. Despite being voted the World Design Capital for 2012 for its contemporary architecture, the city’s past still peers out from around every corner with neoclassical buildings and clear Byzantine-Russian heritage.

Officially the area of Helsinki covers a large part of the sea as well as land, but whether you opt for water-based activities or prefer to stay on terra firma, there is plenty to see and do. Here are some of Helsinki’s highlights.

Walk Finland: Helsinki: Font Walk

Walk Finland: Helsinki: Font Walk | Finland | Scoop.it
Napa Gallery, Eerikinkatu 18, Helsinki, Finland. I ask the woman in the back room about the Font Walk map and she points me to the small cardboard box on the corner table. Only one per customer, please. It is only fair; this is a limited edition. After examining the beautiful map for a while at the gallery, I step back outside. Actually, it would be a good idea to go for a cup of tea and get into the mood for observing fonts... But I decide to do it while walking.

Another memory we had of Helsinki was the next stop on our walk – The Church in The Rock. This Lutheran church, as are most churches in Finland was cut out of granite. The exterior is simply a rock formation, but the interior has been finished in a very Nordic fashion, with very little ornamentation and pomp.

Yet it is still full of natural light which comes in from huge window panels under the copper dome.

HDR photo of Tamminiemi villa in Meilahti district of Helsinki, Finland.

Villa Tamminiemi used to be the official residence of the President of Finland. It is a mansion by the sea next to the idyllic Seurasaari island. The little building on the left hand side is sauna. When president Urho Kekkonen resigned in 1982 the residence was changed to Kekkonen’s private home and when he died in 1987 the mansion was made to Urho Kekkonen’s museum. One of the three current official residences of the President called Mäntyniemi is nearby. There’s of course the Presidential Palace too located in the downtown area. The last residence is Kultaranta in Naantali and it is used for summer residence of the President.
