Russian national in Finland turns to Embassy for help: Voice of Russia | Finland | Scoop.it
Russian national Valentina Putkonen, who was admitted to a mental clinic after she'd been deprived of her parental rights, has asked the Russian Embassy in Finland for legal aid. This came in a statement for the Interfax news agency by Valentina Putkonen’s representative and human rights activist, Johan Beckman.
According to him, the authorities acted on a complaint by Valentina’s neighbour, who, the Russian said, was creating some residential problems, and she told her so.

Finland advocates free trade agreement between Russia and EU countries | Finland | Scoop.it

Russia’s accession into the World Trade Organisation (WTO) next summer will bring Finnish export companies annual savings worth up to hundreds of millions of euros.
However, Finland has its sights already set on the next target: the establishment of a free trade zone between Russia and the European Union.
Even according to the most pessimistic of estimates, Russia’s WTO membership will reduce customs duties by EUR 300 million right away, reckons Minister of European Affairs and Foreign Trade Alexander Stubb (National Coalition Party).

The greater Helsinki area seeks to be the gateway between Europe and Russia. | Helsinki Business Hub

The greater Helsinki area seeks to be the gateway between Europe and Russia. | Helsinki Business Hub | Finland | Scoop.it

The greater Helsinki area is increasingly being seen as a gateway between Europe and Russia. There are a number of companies currently planning to set up operation in Helsinki with an aim to operate in the EU, Russia, or both markets.

Finland is somewhat unique in that it exists with one foot in traditional Western Europe and one foot in Russia. During the nineteenth century Finland was a Grand Duchy in the Russian Empire, and that history is still apparent today in unexpected ways, such as the fact that Finland’s railway uses the Russian gauge as standard. More recently Finnish relations with our eastern neighbour were such that western powers often used Finland as a messenger, or neutral ground, for international diplomacy.

St. Petersburg: to the Finland Station | Finland | Scoop.it
I often wonder what Russia would have been like had Lenin and the Bolsheviks not assumed power during the Russian Revolution.  A revolution was clearly in the offing anyway, and surely the tsar would have been deposed, but perhaps had Lenin not existed, Russia might have avoided the tortures, famines, and persecutions of the years under Communism....
