As in Sweden, the Finnish left succumb to a social-liberal, centre-right catch-all party that has successfully claimed the middle-ground.

On Sunday 5 February, Finland got its 12th President. The conservative National Coalition Party (Kokoomus) candidate, Sauli Niinistö, was elected by a landslide of 62.4% against his Green Party opponent Pekka Haavisto in the second round of the presidential elections.

This election was a disaster for the social democratic candidate, former prime minister Paavo Lipponen, who got only 6.7% of the total vote in the first round run-off. Even the total combined support of the Finnish traditional left, the Social Democrats and the successor party of the once-strong Communists, the Left Alliance, would not have carried a candidate to the second round...

Pro-EU Niinisto wins Finnish presidency

Pro-EU Niinisto wins Finnish presidency | Finland | Scoop.it

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Pro-Europe politician Sauli Niinisto won Finland's presidency on Sunday in an election that showed voters want to keep the country in the euro zone despite misgivings over European Union bailouts.

The former finance minister won with 63 percent support, defeating pro-euro Greens Party candidate Pekka Haavisto.

The two had beaten anti-euro candidates, Paavo Vayrynen of the Centre party and Timo Soini of the Finns Party, in an earlier round last month.

Conservative set to win Finnish presidency

Conservative set to win Finnish presidency | Finland | Scoop.it

Finland's conservative pro-European Sauli Niinistoe has been elected Finnish president, with Green challenger Pekka Haavisto acknowledging Niinistoe's overwhelming triumph at the polls.

Niinistoe, a former finance minister, dominated the first round of the presidential election in January and had a strong lead in opinion polls over Haavisto, a 53-year-old liberal in a same-sex partnership with an Ecuadorian hairdresser.

Niinistoe's experience as finance minister has lent his candidacy credibility amid the European debt crisis, while Haavisto's pro-gay stance has lost him support among older and more traditional Finns, analysts have said.

Finland's former finance minister victorious in presidential election - CNN.com

Niinisto defeated the nation's first openly gay presidential candidate, Pekka Haavisto, with 62.6% of the vote compared to Haavisto's 37.4%.
Both were vying to succeed Tarja Halonen, Finland's first female president, who cannot run for re-election.
In the first round of voting on January 28, the conservative Niinisto took just under 37% of the vote.
Haavisto, a pro-European Green League candidate, got 18.8%, claiming the No. 2 spot and narrowly edging out euro-skeptic Paavo Vayrynen, who had 17.5%.
The winner of Sunday's vote between Niinisto and Haavisto will break a 30-year lock on the presidency by Halonen's Social Democrats.

Pekka Haavisto, the openly gay candidate in Finland's presidential race, has come second in the first round of voting.

Haavisto, 53, is standing for the Green League. Receiving 18.8% of the vote, he finished behind Sauli Niinistö of the National Coalition Party, with 37%.

The result means Haavisto, whose centrist party stands strongly on environmental issues, will face conservative Niinistö in a second vote on 5 February.

Currently, Europe has two gay prime ministers: Iceland’s Johanna Siguraardottir and Belgium’s Elio di Rupo.

There are currently no openly gay presidents.

Pundit: Left's election result 'catastrophic'

Pundit: Left's election result 'catastrophic' | Finland | Scoop.it

The combined vote for Left Alliance leader Paavo Arhinmäki and Social Democrat candidate Paavo Lipponen in Sunday’s presidential election was historically low, at just 13.2 percent. The country will now elect its first non-Social Democrat president for thirty years.
YLE election pundit Risto Uimonen argued that the left’s combined result was catastrophic. He said the lack of trade union support hindered efforts to get out traditional left-wing voters.
“SAK (blue collar trade union confederation) support was decisive for Martti Ahtisaari and Tarja Halonen,” said Uimonen, recalling Finland’s last two presidents. They are both Social Democrats, as is Mauno Koivisto, Ahtisaari’s predecessor.

Pekka Haavisto, Finnish Gay Presidential Candidate, To Face Off With Former Finance Minister In Race

Pekka Haavisto, Finnish Gay Presidential Candidate, To Face Off With Former Finance Minister In Race | Finland | Scoop.it

The 53-year-old former environment minister has held several positions in EU and U.N. operations helping to solve crises in Sudan, Darfur and the Middle East.

"He's extremely cultured and civilized. We need a member of a new, educated generation who hasn't been corrupted by politics," said Laila Halme, a retired graphic artist, as she walked her dog through thick snow to vote in a Helsinki suburb.

Haavisto was overjoyed at making the second round, saying "the enthusiasm has been overwhelming and that will give us a good boost."

Political analyst Olavi Borg says Haavisto has little chance to beat Niinisto in a runoff. Large segments of Finnish voters will find it difficult to back a gay candidate, Borg said. Haavisto has been living in a registered partnership with another man for 10 years...

A win for the euro - Economist

A win for the euro - Economist | Finland | Scoop.it

THOSE who argued that Finland is fast becoming a Eurosceptic country that is against the country's membership of the European single currency, the euro, have been proved wrong by its presidential election. The run-off on February 5th was contested between the two most pro-European candidates. Timo Soini, leader of the anti-euro True Finns, which took a spectacular 18% of the vote in the general election last April, was humiliatingly pushed out in the first round. The winner, Sauli Niinisto, a former centre-right finance minister, took 63% of the vote to 37% for the loser, Pekka Haavisto of the Greens (who was also the first openly gay candidate for the post).

He will replace Tarja Halonen, Finland’s only female head of state and one of its most popular leaders, who has served the maximum two six-year terms.

Sauli Niinisto took 63 percent of the votes, compared to 37 percent for his rival, Greens candidate Pekka Haavisto, official results showed with 100 percent of ballots counted.

Pekka Haavisto's party and sexuality make him a surprise qualifier for Sunday's runoff...

He's gay and Green – not the best of combinations for candidates seeking elected office in Finland. For 30 years, Finns have picked a Social Democrat to be their president. Green and gay candidates are still something of a novelty.

But Pekka Haavisto has experienced something of an Obama moment in the election. He caused a shock in last month's first round of voting by beating more established candidates from bigger parties to qualify for this weekend's runoff vote...

Finnish voters snub anti-euro far-right

Finnish voters snub anti-euro far-right | Finland | Scoop.it

Finland's nationalist anti-immigration Finns Party suffered a heavy setback in this weekend's presidential election, as many of its anti-euro voters fled to the equally eurosceptic Centre Party, observers said Monday.
The Finns Party soared in popularity in last April's legislative elections, becoming the third-biggest political formation with 19 percent of votes as its vehemently anti-EU rhetoric drew voters away from the Centre Party, which struggled to convey its euro opposition.
But in Sunday's first round of presidential voting, the Finns Party candidate and leader, the charismatic and popular Timo Soini, managed to scrape up just 9.4 percent despite a campaign that focused heavily on Finland's role in the eurozone.

Conservative Wins Finland Election, Runoff Needed - ABC News | Finland | Scoop.it

The conservative favorite easily won the first round of Finland's presidential election Sunday, setting up a runoff against an environmentalist leader who is the first openly gay candidate to run for head of state in the Nordic country.

"Pro-Europe policies and supporting the euro have received strong support from the people," Niinisto said.

The president has a largely ceremonial role and is not involved in daily politics, but is considered an important shaper of public opinion in the small Nordic country.
