NewsRoom Finland: Rehn continues to fault Finnish bailout debate http://dlvr.it/RLJgG...

Olli Rehn, the EU's economic affairs commissioner, on Tuesday continued to criticise the Portugal bailout debate in his native Finland as misguided.

Speaking in Strasbourg in France, Rehn said Finnish banks' liabilities in Lehman Brothers had been minimal in 2008 yet the ensuing financial crisis had led to an eight-per cent contraction in Finland's gross domestic product the following year.

"This proves how strong and deep our mutual economic dependence runs," Rehn said.

"This also proves how important it is to safeguard economic stability by way of a shared effort. We are all in the same boat."

"We are not here just to bail out German and French banks but to safeguard Europe's economic stability as a whole."

Political situation in Finland problematic for EU

Political situation in Finland problematic for EU | Finland | Scoop.it
Economic and Monetary affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn was in an uncharacteristically tense on Monday.

Rehn is dealing with the same problem that is facing the leaders of the euro zone: what to do if Finland rejects the EUR 80 billion bailout package for Portugal, which was ironed out by EU finance ministers in Hungary last month?
Rehn is under considerable pressure now to find a solution to the issue. The chairman of the euro group, Luxembourg’s Jean-Claude Juncker and EU President Herman Van Rompuy will have to consider alternate plans, which do not yet officially exist.
