Finland from a Teacher's Perspective

Finland from a Teacher's Perspective | Finland | Scoop.it

I was asked by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to write an article comparing the US and Finnish education systems; I was pleased to do so. It took me hours upon hours because I wanted to do justice to the comparison. As you already know, I love Finland, its people, and I love what Finns do for their children. I hope I've captured some of this beauty.

Enjoy!

Rich, happy and good at austerity - FT.com

Rich, happy and good at austerity - FT.com | Finland | Scoop.it

Like Greece, Portugal and Ireland, Finland is on the geographical periphery of the eurozone, but it has little else in common with these three, which have all received international bailouts in the past two years.
Richer, happier and better educated than the OECD rich nations’ club average, Finland is also one of only a few countries that all the main credit agencies still judge as triple A-rated.

There are challenges, for sure, such as a population that is ageing more rapidly than any country apart from Japan and a faltering industrial base, but these troubles seem minor compared with those that face other European states.

School Pupils' Skills Worsen Worryingly

School Pupils' Skills Worsen Worryingly | Finland | Scoop.it
The skills of comprehensive schools’ pupils have deteriorated over the last decade. A follow-up study in the city of Vantaa revealed that ninth graders’ knowledge has diminished dramatically—and the same findings show up elsewhere.
Alarming signals have lately emerged from comprehensive schools’ classrooms. The Finnish National Board of Education has found writing skills lacking for every third boy in ninth grade.
Finland has done well in the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) rankings in 2010, but the results were a little worse than last time.

OECD Better Life Index

OECD Better Life Index | Finland | Scoop.it
Your Better Life Index by the OECD shows how Finland performs according to the importance you give to the 11 topics – like education, housing, environment, and so on – that contribute to well-being.

In general, Finns are more satisfied with their lives than the OECD average, with 82% of people saying they have more positive experiences in an average day (feelings of rest, pride in accomplishment, enjoyment, etc) than negative ones (pain, worry, sadness, boredom, etc). This figure is higher than the OECD average of 80%.

Museum of Finnish Architecture Exhibition: The Best School in the World

Museum of Finnish Architecture Exhibition: The Best School in the World | Finland | Scoop.it
The Best School in the World, exhibition at the Museum of Finnish Architecture

8 Jun - 25 Sep 2011

Exhibition at the Museum of Finnish Architecture, June 8th–September 25th 2011 Finnish students are top performers in the OECD ’s PISA studies, but what’s the secret to the success of the Finnish education system? The MFA explores this question from an architectural perspective: In what type of environments does learning take place today, and what kind of physical settings are the most conducive to successful learning? The exhibition examines how contemporary school architecture addresses the varied needs of today’s learners and multiform teaching methods. The core part of the exhibition looks at school architecture from the 2000s, an abridged version of which featured at the Venice Biennale of Architecture in autumn 2010. The seven schools presented in detail offer a varied sample of functional and architectural solutions.

Study: Finnish teenagers unruly in class

Study: Finnish teenagers unruly in class | Finland | Scoop.it
Finland, which has long basked in the sunshine of high marks in the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment, or PISA studies, now finds itself at the opposite end of a new PISA survey.
While academic achievement may remain high, the new study suggests that Finnish classrooms are among the most unruly in the world.
A PISA study on classroom discipline conducted in 2009 put Finland near the end, with only Greece and Argentina exhibiting worse problems. Of the 65 countries in the comparison, Japan had the most orderly schools.
