Finland and Nokia: An affair to remember

Finland and Nokia: An affair to remember | Finland | Scoop.it

Pride and diversity. Dependency and acquaintance. Pride and nostalgia. Sun and moon.

These are the answers given by Nokia's vice president of software, the research director of ETLA (the Research Institute of the Finnish Economy), Finland's minister of European Affairs and Foreign Trade, and the CEO of Jolla—now Finland's new smartphone hope. The question was: use one word to describe Nokia's historic relationship with Finland and one word to describe it in the future. For those of you confused by the last answer, it has to do with which orbits which.

Nokia: End of the line - FT.com | Finland | Scoop.it

Nokia’s past and what could have been Nokia’s future come together in the evening sun on the Helsinki waterfront, outside a café housed in the Finnish group’s old cable factory. Harri Kiljander, a former Nokia manager, is showing off a prototype of the chunky, half-moon-shaped 7700, one of the company’s first forays into the touchscreen devices that now dominate the mobile phone market.

The 7700, which dates from 2003, was never released. A follow-up model was discontinued. When Apple revolutionised the smartphone market with its iPhone in 2007, Nokia, the world’s largest handset manufacturer until last year, was left trailing. On Tuesday, the company passed to Microsoft the supremely difficult mission of catching up with rivals, agreeing the takeover of its mobile phones business in a $5.4bn deal.

Homemade no more: Nokia’s last Finnish factory has stopped production | Finland | Scoop.it

According to the Finnish publication YLE, Nokia’s last mobile phone factory in the country has stopped producing handsets. The last phones from the plant in Salo were completed on Wednesday.

Nokia confirmed its plans to close the plant today. The move was expected, as TNW reported in June. While the factory will not build more phones, it won’t be formally closed until September. According to The Nokia Blog, an unofficial publication that covers the company, some 780 people will lose their jobs.

Nokia’s social media veteran in search of killer brand | Writer. Mobilist. Social Media Geek.

I was standing on a burning platform and jumped into the North Sea. Well, I was pushed, but I screamed “CANNONBALL!!!”
Nine incredible years with the greatest brand that ever existed and most talented individuals imaginable. I’ve dodged the layoff-reaper many times before and am very saddened to see my number finally come up.
I’m very proud of my accomplishments at Nokia. As editor-in-chief I took Nokia’s official blog from nothing to over one million uniques per month in five languages, making it the third most read corporate blog on the internet. As a digital marketer I was the madman behind such innovative viral campaigns as WidSets Pets, OpenAtOwnRisk AKA “the weirdest video ever”, and Design by Community where our readers collectively designed a phone. As a communications manager I was often up to the wee hours of the morning personally responding to Nokia fans on Twitter and Facebook when major, and often difficult, announcements were made such as the changes in strategy, CEO, or ironically, layoffs.

Nokia bets big on enterprise segment with 'Lumia'

Nokia bets big on enterprise segment with 'Lumia' | Finland | Scoop.it
Betting big on its 'Lumia' series, Finnish handset maker Nokia is targeting sectors like manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, banking and insurance to capture a major share of India's enterprise smartphone market.

Many companies are now allowing employees to use their personally owned devices for official use and that Nokia feels is a major opportunity.

"Earlier companies used to buy handsets in bulk, but now they are now looking at allowing workforce to use their own devices at work. This shows that there is a clear need for alternatives and we see that as a big opportunity," Nokia India Director (Enterprise Sales) Suresh Vedula said.

Nokia already has its E-series of business devices and now, with Lumia 800 and Lumia 610, the portfolio ensures that needs of these entities are taken care of, he added.

Hope emerges for Nokia's future following purchase by Microsoft - Financial Times

Hope emerges for Nokia's future following purchase by Microsoft - Financial Times | Finland | Scoop.it

Salo is perhaps the best place to gauge the rise and fall of Nokia. The small town 100km west of Helsinki was the birthplace of the Finnish group’s mobile phone business in the late 1970s.

As Nokia grew into the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile phones, so did its importance to the town: at its peak it employed 5,000 of the 26,000 workers in Salo and contributed €50m in corporate taxes to the city’s budget.

Then came Nokia’s fall and a drastic cutting back, leaving only 1,200 workers today – all of whom are destined to move to Microsoft under its €5.44bn deal to buy the Finnish group’s mobile phone business.

Apple, Android and The Decline of the Euro - Forbes

Apple, Android and The Decline of the Euro - Forbes | Finland | Scoop.it

Finland’s GDP is about $238 billion. It grew steadily from the mid-1990s onwards and peaked about three years ago. That trajectory is roughly in line with Nokia’s growth and decline, though of course Nokia is falling faster. Since the early 2000s Nokia has contributed between 4 and 6% of Finland’s GDP. Nokia and mobility are both very important to a country that has grown spectacularly but solidly over the past twenty years...

Analysis: Even in emerging markets, Nokia's star is fading

Analysis: Even in emerging markets, Nokia's star is fading | Finland | Scoop.it

(Reuters) - Nokia phones once took pride of place in Manish Khatri's Mumbai store, but now models made by Samsung Electronics get the limelight.

He has nothing against Nokia, he says, but it's better for business to push the more popular models.

That simple calculation is being made in thousands of stores across India and similar emerging markets, where Nokia's rivals used to be relative minnows.

For 14 years the world's biggest seller of mobile phones, it was overtaken by Korea's Samsung in the first quarter of this year, having already watched both Apple and Samsung leapfrog its lead in the lucrative smartphone segment last year.

Nokia's Ollila expects signs of turnaround in 2012 -TV

HELSINKI, April 25(Reuters) -HELSINKI, April 25 (Reuters) - Nokia's outgoing board chairman Jorma Ollila said on Wednesday he was confident there will be signs of turnaround this year in the struggling Finnish handset maker.

"I am totally convinced that a turnaround will come. There will be some signs this year as new products are being launched," Ollila told in an interview with Finnish television channel MTV3. He said he did not believe a merger would be a solution to Nokia's problems.

"Mergers are not a solution for high-tech players. The cultures are so different. There is great reluctance to bring cultures together," he said.

Nokia Connects | Silicon Suomi: Why Nokia’s right to call Finland home

Nokia Connects | Silicon Suomi: Why Nokia’s right to call Finland home | Finland | Scoop.it
Ever since Stephen Elop, the first non Finnish CEO, took over at Nokia there’s been speculation that Nokia should move its headquarters to Silicon Valley. In some North American journalists’ eyes, Suomi, (the Finnish name for Finland) is a godforsaken backwater, a place famous only for saunas, ice swimming and a president who looks like Conan O’Brien. But, there’s some very good reasons why Stephen Elop recently said Nokia’s headquarters would stay in Espoo. And they’ve got nothing to do with his love of ice hockey.
