  According to a poll commissioned by Helsingin Sanomat and conducted by TNS Gallup, more than two thirds of Finns (68 per cent) are against joining the alliance.

 

Support for membership in the NATO military alliance has fallen sharply in the past year and a half. According to a poll commissioned by Helsingin Sanomat and conducted by TNS Gallup, more than two thirds of Finns (68 per cent) are against joining the alliance.
The last time in the new century that support for joining NATO has been this low was in 2003 - when the United States went to war with Iraq.

Finnish and Swedish crisis management forces have probably inflicted casualties in clashes with rebels in Afghanistan, say the commanders of the forces in an interview with Helsingin Sanomat.
Finland and Sweden are a part of the NATO-led ISAF operation in Afghanistan. ISAF supports the Afghan army and police, which the Taleban rebels are fighting against.
“Our mission is to support Afghan forces and in fulfilling that mission we are involved in conflict situations in which we use deadly firepower, so there probably are victims on the other side; says Lieutenant Colonel Petri Kosonen, the commander of the Finnish forces.

Prime Minister designate Jyrki Katainen says that government formation talks will continue Tuesday, even though the Portugal aid package will be presented to Parliament by the caretaker administration then.

Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb, who heads up the working group on foreign, EU and security policy, was a little more direct when asked how discussions on the formulation of policy about relations with NATO were going.
"No comment, especially not about bullshit," replied Stubb.

(Reuters) - Finland's leading presidential candidate Sauli Niinisto said Monday he will not push for the country to join NATO if he is elected, despite his party's enthusiasm for membership of the military alliance.

Many Finns fear that joining NATO could provoke neighboring Russia after decades of neutrality during and since the Cold War. However, leading politicians in Niinisto's right-leaning National Coalition party have spoken in favor of membership for Finland, which fought the Soviet Union during World War Two.

Finland to Begin Afghan Withdrawal Next Year « VOA Breaking News

Finland says it will begin withdrawing its forces from Afghanistan next year. The government said Tuesday that 50 of its 195 troops serving with the NATO-led force will return home in 2012.

 

All foreign combat troops are expected to leave Afghanistan by the end of 2014. International troops have already begun transferring security control of parts of Afghanistan to local forces.
The Finnish government says it will shift its focus to development and the training of Afghan forces. The country will also continue to take part in the European Union Police Mission in Afghanistan.

Negotiators in the ongoing government formation talks are coming to the conclusion that Finland will not make moves to apply for membership in NATO in the current electoral term. However, Finland is not ruling out a close relationship with the alliance
Finland’s NATO stance has evolved slowly. Possible membership in NATO appeared in political texts in the 1990s. The turns of phrase have changed as different government programmes and security policy reports have been issued.

NATO has confirmed to Helsingin Sanomat that it is interested in the possibilities of Partnership for Peace countries like Finland to take part in the alliance’s actions in Libya in enforcing the arms export ban and the no-fly zone imposed on the country.
Earlier on Monday Minister for Foreign Affairs Alexander Stubb (Nat. Coalition Party) said that Finland had not yet received any requests for such participation.
