Hope emerges for Nokia's future following purchase by Microsoft - Financial Times

Hope emerges for Nokia's future following purchase by Microsoft - Financial Times | Finland | Scoop.it

Salo is perhaps the best place to gauge the rise and fall of Nokia. The small town 100km west of Helsinki was the birthplace of the Finnish group’s mobile phone business in the late 1970s.

As Nokia grew into the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile phones, so did its importance to the town: at its peak it employed 5,000 of the 26,000 workers in Salo and contributed €50m in corporate taxes to the city’s budget.

Then came Nokia’s fall and a drastic cutting back, leaving only 1,200 workers today – all of whom are destined to move to Microsoft under its €5.44bn deal to buy the Finnish group’s mobile phone business.

What better place to poke our nosey noses around Nokia than its home turf? Here at the Aalto university, talking to local industry watchers and keen developers in an offshoot room of its bustling start-up lodge.
The Finns love Nokia. Somewhat bizarrely, our impression among businesses we've talked to so far - and we will be down at Nokia HQ tomorrow to find out more - is that Microsoft has managed to buy itself something priceless. You wouldn't think you could buy loyalty. But the Finns have let their love of Nokia transfer over to its abusive controller, Microsoft. Not the Stockholm Syndrome. Helsinki syndrome, we guess.

The Finnish developers indict Windows Phone 7 and RIM | Finland | Scoop.it
Today I had a group of developers over from Finland and we headed to the Ritz for some interviews and drinks. Finland, you know as the land of Nokia’s headquarters. These entrepreneurs should be Nokia fanboys through and through, but what I heard from them was stunning.

They were brutal on Nokia and Microsoft. Only one of the seven companies said they were developing apps for Windows Phone 7 and even that one said “we might as well, we already built apps for every other platform.”
