Martti Ahtisaari, a former president of Finland, was quoted as saying by national daily Helsingin Sanomat on Sunday that he believed that Muammar Gaddafi's time as Libyan leader was running out.

Ahtisaari added that he hoped that Gaddafi would leave Libya while it was still an option.

Ahtisaari went on to describe the UN security council's decision to authorise intervention in Libya as historic.

Former President Martti Ahtisaari says that he would have seen no sense in Finland providing fighter aircraft to take part in enforcing the no-fly zone in Libya. Ahtisaari added that he believes Finland acted responsibly in the matter and that the country may have a lot to contribute to the operation at a later stage.

NATO has confirmed to Helsingin Sanomat that it is interested in the possibilities of Partnership for Peace countries like Finland to take part in the alliance’s actions in Libya in enforcing the arms export ban and the no-fly zone imposed on the country.
Earlier on Monday Minister for Foreign Affairs Alexander Stubb (Nat. Coalition Party) said that Finland had not yet received any requests for such participation.

Traditionally Finland has actively supported UN actions and resolutions. However researcher Charly Salonius-Pasternak from the Finnish Institute of International Affairs says that Finland is not doing enough in regard to Libya.
“It’s difficult to watch—when for years support has been given for protection of civilians and implementation of UN resolutions—that now it’s announced so quickly that there’s no involvement whatsoever,” Salonius-Pasternak said in an interview with the YLE Aamu-tv programme. http://bit.ly/hckz4F
