As in Sweden, the Finnish left succumb to a social-liberal, centre-right catch-all party that has successfully claimed the middle-ground.

On Sunday 5 February, Finland got its 12th President. The conservative National Coalition Party (Kokoomus) candidate, Sauli Niinistö, was elected by a landslide of 62.4% against his Green Party opponent Pekka Haavisto in the second round of the presidential elections.

This election was a disaster for the social democratic candidate, former prime minister Paavo Lipponen, who got only 6.7% of the total vote in the first round run-off. Even the total combined support of the Finnish traditional left, the Social Democrats and the successor party of the once-strong Communists, the Left Alliance, would not have carried a candidate to the second round...

Gay and Green presidential contender battles to break the mould in Finland

Gay and Green presidential contender battles to break the mould in Finland | Finland | Scoop.it
Pekka Haavisto's party and sexuality make him a surprise qualifier for Sunday's runoff...

He's gay and Green – not the best of combinations for candidates seeking elected office in Finland. For 30 years, Finns have picked a Social Democrat to be their president. Green and gay candidates are still something of a novelty.

But Pekka Haavisto has experienced something of an Obama moment in the election. He caused a shock in last month's first round of voting by beating more established candidates from bigger parties to qualify for this weekend's runoff vote...

Finland Could Have A Gay President! | PerezHilton.com

Finland Could Have A Gay President! | PerezHilton.com | Finland | Scoop.it

And it could be this guy!
Finland is currently having a presidential election and one of their candidates is Green League candidate Pekka Haavisto, who is openly gay.
He will go up against Sauli Niinistö in the election's second round, which occurs on February 5.
This is a huge step for equality - something that's not new to Finland. The country currently has a female president in office, Tarja Halonen.
We could certainly learn a thing or two about presidential candidates in the U.S….

Haavisto: The deck will be reshuffled

Haavisto: The deck will be reshuffled | Finland | Scoop.it

Green League candidate Pekka Haavisto said Sunday evening that the deck will be reshuffled for the second round in the presidential election, as supporters of the candidates now out of the race regroup behind one of the two remaining hopefuls.
Haavisto believes that Finns want an empathetic president, who will not only do the job but also understand the people's problems. He also said he believes that his campaign should continue as it has up till now.
"It's not worth starting with any amazing tricks," said Haavisto.

Presidential Election - Sauli Niinistö and Pekka Haavisto go through to run-off in February

Presidential Election - Sauli Niinistö and Pekka Haavisto go through to run-off in February | Finland | Scoop.it

With all the votes counted in the first round of Presidential Elections on Sunday, no candidate achieved the 50% support required for automatic election, but advance favourite Sauli Niinistö (National Coalition Party, 37.0%) and recent campaign phenomenon Pekka Haavisto (Greens, 18.8%) will take part in a second round run-off next month to determine who succeeds Tarja Halonen in the post of President of the Republic.

The result means an end to a sequence of Finnish Social Democrat presidents dating back to Mauno Koivisto in 1982.
Before Koivisto's election, the office had been held for a quarter of a century by Urho Kekkonen, originally of the Agrarian League, the precursor of today's Centre Party.

Gay presidential candidate through first-round Finnish vote

Gay presidential candidate through first-round Finnish vote | Finland | Scoop.it
Pekka Haavisto, the openly gay candidate in Finland's presidential race, has come second in the first round of voting.

Haavisto, 53, is standing for the Green League. Receiving 18.8% of the vote, he finished behind Sauli Niinistö of the National Coalition Party, with 37%.

The result means Haavisto, whose centrist party stands strongly on environmental issues, will face conservative Niinistö in a second vote on 5 February.

Currently, Europe has two gay prime ministers: Iceland’s Johanna Siguraardottir and Belgium’s Elio di Rupo.

There are currently no openly gay presidents.

Pekka Haavisto, Finnish Gay Presidential Candidate, To Face Off With Former Finance Minister In Race

Pekka Haavisto, Finnish Gay Presidential Candidate, To Face Off With Former Finance Minister In Race | Finland | Scoop.it

The 53-year-old former environment minister has held several positions in EU and U.N. operations helping to solve crises in Sudan, Darfur and the Middle East.

"He's extremely cultured and civilized. We need a member of a new, educated generation who hasn't been corrupted by politics," said Laila Halme, a retired graphic artist, as she walked her dog through thick snow to vote in a Helsinki suburb.

Haavisto was overjoyed at making the second round, saying "the enthusiasm has been overwhelming and that will give us a good boost."

Political analyst Olavi Borg says Haavisto has little chance to beat Niinisto in a runoff. Large segments of Finnish voters will find it difficult to back a gay candidate, Borg said. Haavisto has been living in a registered partnership with another man for 10 years...

Pro-euro candidate wins first round of Finnish vote

Pro-euro candidate wins first round of Finnish vote | Finland | Scoop.it

(Reuters) - Pro-euro candidate Sauli Niinisto won the first round of Finland's presidential election on Sunday, signaling voters want to keep cooperating with the European Union despite their frustration over bailouts for debt-ridden member states.

The former finance minister got 37 percent of the vote. He faces a February 5 run-off with another pro-euro candidate, Pekka Haavisto of the Greens Party, who got about 19 percent.

Anti-euro candidates Paavo Vayrynen and Timo Soini dropped out of the race after the final tally.

While the president has little executive power beyond military and diplomatic affairs, it is a high-profile post and the strength of the pro-euro vote will ease pressure on the government to take a hard line against Brussels. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/01/22/us-finland-idUSTRE80L0W020120122
