Parliamentarian Pekka Haavisto has been unanimously selected as candidate for the Green League in next year’s Finnish Presidential elections. A gathering of the party in the city of Kuopio hoped he would become the first green president in Europe.

21/5/2011- Two thirds of all supporters of the True Finns party, which catapulted itself to the third largest in Finland in last month’s Parliamentary elections, feel that the party made the right decision when it decided to remain in opposition. A fresh poll on Finnish attitudes toward the True Finns and their possible participation in government formation talks, found that half of voters of the Green League felt the same way.

Centre Party Secretary Timo Laaninen says it is vital for his party that the True Finns should take part in negotiations to form a new government.

Responding to the Centre Party's wish, True Finns chair Timo Soini said he was giving it serious reconsideration. Soini, however, reiterated his opposition to government co-operation with the Greens and to support for eurozone bailouts.

On Friday negotiators of the Green League had threatened to leave the talks over the question of election reform.
The Social Democrats have opposed a proposed constitutional amendment, which had been approved by the previous Parliament, which would make it easier for small parties to get candidates elected to Parliament from small constituencies. To take effect, the bill would have to be passed by the new Parliament as well.

Green League chair Anni Sinnemäki is to announce on Friday whether she will continue in her role as party leader despite the party’s losses in the recent parliamentary election. Sinnemäki will give her decision at the start of the Green League’s party executive meeting.
The Greens lost five of the15 seats they held before the election. Up to now support for the Greens has risen at every election.
The Greens’ chair will be chosen at a party congress in Kuopio on June 11-12.
