Google Reincarnates Dead Paper Mill as Data Center of Future

Google Reincarnates Dead Paper Mill as Data Center of Future | Finland | Scoop.it
Joe Kava found himself on the southern coast of Finland, sending robotic cameras down an underground tunnel that stretched into the Baltic Sea. It’s not quite what he expected when he joined Google to run its data centers.

In February of 2009, Google paid about $52 million for an abandoned paper mill in Hamina, Finland, after deciding that the 56-year-old building was the ideal place to build one of the massive computing facilities that serve up its myriad online services. Part of the appeal was that the Hamina mill included an underground tunnel once used to pull water from the Gulf of Finland. Originally, that frigid Baltic water cooled a steam generation plant at the mill, but Google saw it as a way to cool its servers.

Phishers Store Rogue Forms on Google Docs - Softpedia

Phishers Store Rogue Forms on Google Docs - Softpedia | Finland | Scoop.it
Security researchers from Finnish antivirus vendor F-Secure have found phishing forms stored as spreadsheets on Google Docs, outlining yet another way in which legitimate services are being abused by cyber criminals.

The researchers have found several such rogue spreadsheets which seem to be part of different phishing campaign.

"Spreadsheets can even contain functionality, such as forms, and these can be published to the whole world. Unfortunately, that means we regularly see phishing sites via Google Docs spreadsheets and hosted on spreadsheets.google.com," says F-Secure's Chief Research Officer, Mikko Hypponen.

Google's Finland Data Center uses seawater for cooling | 9to5 ...

I’ve often wondered why data centers don’t all move as far north (or south-toward the poles) as possible, especially as cooling becomes the most expensive part of running a data center.

Finland qualifies as pretty far north and water from the North Sea certainly is a great cooling agent. That’s what Google’s move there seems so smart.’

Google is preparing to open its newest data center, a large facility in a former paper mill in Hamina, Finland. The facility uses the sea to replace the chiller in its cooling system, collecting cool water from an inlet pipe located about 7.5 meters beneath the service of the Baltic Sea. The water than travels into the facility through large tunnels carved out of granite. Google also used a small submarine to explore the tunnels to ensure that they were clear of blockages that could impede the flow of water...
