In Rovio And Supercell’s Wake, Finland’s Gaming Scene Sees A Renaissance | TechCrunch

In Rovio And Supercell’s Wake, Finland’s Gaming Scene Sees A Renaissance | TechCrunch | Finland | Scoop.it

Somehow, 2013 marked the year that Helsinki became a global gaming capital in its own right.

Maybe it was because Supercell, a humble gaming studio that started back in 2010, blossomed into a $3 billion company in less than a year.

Or maybe it was when Rovio announced the two billionth download for Angry Birds with a dubstep dance on-stage from the Finnish National Ballet. Or...

Artikkeli kertoo mm.

These 12 Startups Prove Angry Birds Isn't The Only Hot Tech Product To Come Out Of Finland

These 12 Startups Prove Angry Birds Isn't The Only Hot Tech Product To Come Out Of Finland | Finland | Scoop.it

The Angry Birds game maker is insanely successful and has been the subject of IPO rumors since early 2011. Some have suggested the company may file its IPO next year.

But Finland has a number of other promising startups, thanks in part to government support of young companies in the country.

Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation, has invested more than $66 million in the gaming industry since 1995.

Last year, Tekes invested about $180 million in startups.

Scandimania: Adventures in Finnish games, part one

Scandimania: Adventures in Finnish games, part one | Finland | Scoop.it

It’s unlikely there’s a national games trade more relevant to the fast-changing face of publishing on earth. This is not a industry making triple-A games, but rather seeking growth off the back of the rise of digital distribution and mobile. Whether or not digital is the way forward over brick and mortar retail isn’t a discussion in Finland. It happened: digital won.  http://www.vg247.com/2012/02/03/scandimania-adventures-in-finnish-games-part-one/

Kari Laurila is the CEO of Team Action Zone (TAZ) -- a Finland-based start-up that builds huge games with hundreds of people, using a set of cheap mobile phones with GPS chips.

"We're about making people do exercise with games," he says. The 1.5-year-old company organises outdoor team games for as many as 500 people at a time, which Laurila refers to as "exergaming". The company's line-up includes massively-multiplayer versions of capture-the-flag, treasure hunts, wargames and even Pong...

A truly Finnish finish for the ANGRY BIRDS - Genelec News | Finland | Scoop.it

“They’re a great Finnish games company and we’re a great Finnish speaker company, so it’s brilliant to be able to co-operate,” says Mika Makilaakso, Genelec’s Sales Manager in Finland. The need to create the perfect audio soundtrack for the game required Rovio to invest heavily in Genelec monitors at its headquarters in Helsinki. In fact, Genelec speakers have been installed into every room at the company’s new offices.

Supercell's CEO reveals the culture he built to produce a £2.5 billion company in 2 years (Wired UK)

Supercell's CEO reveals the culture he built to produce a £2.5 billion company in 2 years (Wired UK) | Finland | Scoop.it

"The best people make the best games," says Ilkka Paananen, founder of Finnish gaming startup Supercell. "It sounds simple and perhaps naive, but if you truly believe it then the only thing that matters is getting those people and creating the best possible environment so they stay."

It does sound simple and a little naive, but Supercell'sincredible success hangs over Slush 2013 and is emphasised by the company's opening address to journalists the day before theHelsinki-based startup conference begins. It also doesn't hurt that Supercell is sponsoring Slush's big party and, having earned €1.5 billion (£1.2 billion) for a 51 percent sale in June, the two-year-old company is unlikely to let the bar run dry."

Angry Birds Will Never Die. Now There's A Movie In The Works.

Angry Birds Will Never Die. Now There's A Movie In The Works. | Finland | Scoop.it
Sony clearly has a lot of faith in the brand. The movie isn't slated to hit theaters until July 2016.

The move is the latest in Rovio’s quest for Angry Birds world domination. In addition to the seven Angry Birds games (including Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Star Wars) there are Angry Birdsbooks, Angry Birds merchandise and an Angry Birds cartoon. Rovio unveiled the in-game animated shorts in March and so far the toons have been viewed 150 million times.

It’s amazing that such a simple game is spawning such a vast franchise. Who would have thought that throwing birds with a slingshot would result in a business worth hundreds of millions of dollars?

Finland's Newest Hit Maker: Supercell

Finland's Newest Hit Maker: Supercell | Finland | Scoop.it
One of the newest hit-makers in the mobile-game industry once again hails from Finland, but Supercell is making money with cows and dragons instead of Angry Birds.

Supercell Oy says it is profitable and grossing more than $500,000 a day in revenue from its two games, the medieval-strategy title "Clash of Clans" and the farming app "Hay Day."

Amid the success, the two-year-old startup in November moved its 80 employees into a massive office complex abandoned by struggling phone maker Nokia Corp. a sign of the times in Helsinki. The city's buzzing startup scene has hatched numerous big-game developers in recent years, including "Angry Birds" maker Rovio Entertainment Ltd.

$500,000 per DAY in revenue! Think these game-building skills might be more worthwhile than teaching geometry, or a second language that could never be used? Just saying....

Eetu Puro's curator insight, April 21, 2015 2:21 AM

Supercell jyräsi heti pelillään Clash of Clans listä kärkeen. Artikkelissa kerrotaan Supercellistä ja haastatellaan sen työntekijöitä. Supercell teki kaksi peliä, joista molemmista tuli kovia hittejä (Clash of Clans ja Hay Day). He eivät kuitenkaan menestyneet näiden kahden pelin ansiosta vaan oikeastaan neljän pilalle menneen pelin ansiosta, jotka opettivat ja johtivat tähän lopputulokseen. Supercellilla ollaan tiukkoja, jos idealla on vähänkin huonot tulevaisuuden näkymät, se lakkautetaan siihen paikkaan. Supercell antaa myös varmuutta muille pienemmille Suomalaisille peliyhtiöille.

The Finns have a remedy for at-risk readers: more computer games | Prevention Action | Finland | Scoop.it
Finnish researchers have developed a computer game that may be better than human intervention at helping at-risk readers catch up with their peers.

A computer game may be better than humans at helping young at-risk readers catch up with their peers.

Seven-year-old Finnish children at risk of reading disability reached the level of their peers – and by some measures, passed the mainstream children – with the help of an educational computer game that trained them on phonetics. Notably, when the same reading intervention was carried out without the computer-assisted training, it failed to produce similar positive effects.
