Finland ready to compromise on bigger bailout fund | Reuters

SAARISELKA, Finland (Reuters) - Finland is prepared to compromise on creating a bigger rescue fund for the euro zone despite scepticism over whether it is needed, Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen said on Saturday.

While almost all of the currency bloc's 17 member states favour a stronger firewall, Germany and Finland have been reluctant to commit.

"We are ready to find a compromise," Katainen told Reuters in an interview on the sidelines of a gathering of senior European policy makers in Saariselka, a resort in Finnish Lapland. "What's important is that the firewall is credible."

Finland EU Min: Stronger Role For European Commission President Needed - Wall Street Journal | Finland | Scoop.it

BRUGES, Belgium (Dow Jones)--The role of the President of the European Commission should be strengthened by combining it with the functions of the President of the European Council and a proposed president for the Euro Area Summits, Finland's Minister for European Affairs and Foreign Trade Alexander Stubb said Thursday.

"There is a need for more leadership in Europe and I would rather have this leadership in the hands of a joint, perhaps elected, trustee, than self-anointed member states," Stubb said in a speech held at the College ...

Finland eases position on Bulgarian and Romanian membership in Schengen - Helsingin Sanomat

Finland joined The Netherlands in September this year in opposing accession of the two countries into the Schengen zone.

The Finnish government has modified its previous position on the possible membership of Bulgaria and Romania in the Schengen treaty. Finland joined The Netherlands in September this year in opposing accession of the two countries into the Schengen zone. Now Finland is willing to let both countries join Schengen in two stages – in March and July next year – if certain conditions are met.
The conditions put forward by Finland are that Romania and Bulgaria must show that they have developed their legal systems, and that they have made efforts to prevent corruption and organised crime. Progress would be measured through the European Commission’s Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM).

The European Council on Foreign Relations | True Europeans now need a 'Plan B'

The European Council on Foreign Relations | True Europeans now need a 'Plan B' | Finland | Scoop.it
As integration has turned into disintegration, the role of the European political establishment was also reversed, from spearheading further unification to defending the status quo. As a result, anyone who considers the status quo undesirable, unacceptable or unsustainable has had to take an anti-European stance. And, as heavily indebted countries are pushed towards insolvency, the number of the disaffected continues to grow, together with support for anti-European parties such as True Finns in Finland

NUI Galway-led climate change research predicts cleaner air but a warmer Europe by 2030

New research initiated by teams at NUI Galway and the University of Helsinki has revealed that the true rate of global warming caused by greenhouse gases has been masked by the cooling effects of tiny airborne particles. According to the research these atmospheric aerosols — also known as particulate matter — form reflective haze and cloud layers which lead to an aerosol cooling effect. However new technologies and stricter environmental controls will see that effect reduced in the years ahead.

Euro Leaders Need to Step Up Austerity, Finland’s PM Says | Finland | Scoop.it

European policy makers can’t rely on the central bank to manage the region’s crisis and must now follow with measures to cut debt and restore economic confidence, Finland’s Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen said.

“Crisis management can’t be outsourced to the central bank,” Katainen said in an interview in Saariselkae, Finland. “Member states have a couple of years to take austerity measures to restore and strengthen credibility for when the operations end.”

The greater Helsinki area seeks to be the gateway between Europe and Russia. | Helsinki Business Hub

The greater Helsinki area seeks to be the gateway between Europe and Russia. | Helsinki Business Hub | Finland | Scoop.it

The greater Helsinki area is increasingly being seen as a gateway between Europe and Russia. There are a number of companies currently planning to set up operation in Helsinki with an aim to operate in the EU, Russia, or both markets.

Finland is somewhat unique in that it exists with one foot in traditional Western Europe and one foot in Russia. During the nineteenth century Finland was a Grand Duchy in the Russian Empire, and that history is still apparent today in unexpected ways, such as the fact that Finland’s railway uses the Russian gauge as standard. More recently Finnish relations with our eastern neighbour were such that western powers often used Finland as a messenger, or neutral ground, for international diplomacy.

Europe Running Out of Options to Fix Crisis, Katainen Says - BusinessWeek

Europe Running Out of Options to Fix Crisis, Katainen Says - BusinessWeek | Finland | Scoop.it
(Bloomberg) -- Europe is running out of options to fix its debt crisis and it is now up to Italy and Greece to convince markets they can deliver the necessary austerity measures, Finnish Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen said.
“The European Union cannot restore confidence in Greece and Italy if they don’t do it themselves,” Katainen said in an interview in Helsinki yesterday. “We can’t do anything to boost confidence in them. If there are doubts about these countries’ abilities to take sensible and correct decisions on economic policy, no one else can repair that.” ...

EU Crisis Fix Lies in Deployment of Tools, Not More Summits, Katainen Says

Europe’s best bet to escape the debt crisis threatening to engulf Italy and Spain is to implement measures already agreed on immediately instead of searching for new tools, Finland’s Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen said.

“Implementing the existing measures is the way to reinforce trust in the European financial system, not by coming up with new measures all the time,” Katainen said in a phone interview yesterday from Helsinki. “We’re not warming up to any new innovations concerning the European Financial Stability Facility.”
