Aurora Borealis - Inari Municipality, Northern Lapland, Finland

Aurora Borealis - Inari Municipality, Northern Lapland, Finland | Finland | Scoop.it

Tonight I witnessed one of the best Northern Lights displays that I've ever seen, and I mean EVER in over 5000 hours on the ice. It was, in short, truly spectacular and something that will live with me for a lifetime. In fact, at one point, I stopped taking images completely and simply lay on my back in the snow staring upwards, mesmerised by the awe-inspiring light-show that was unfolding before my very eyes. Equipment: Canon EOS 5D MkII camera, Canon EF 14mm f/2.8 lens, ISO 1000, Aperture 2.8, Shutter Speed: 2.5s - 15s.

Glass Igloo in Kakslauttanen Hotel in Finland

Glass Igloo in Kakslauttanen Hotel in Finland | Finland | Scoop.it
When you hear about Finland you think of Santa Claus home and Aurora Borealis. Of course there are a million other things to see there, but these two are the most famous ones. Any way, the polar nights are known to be really cold , so it’s pretty hard to stay out and enjoy the beautiful show of the skies, even if you are equipped with fur coats and thick clothes. That is precisely why some smart guys from Kakslauttanen Hotel in Finland had a brilliant idea: to build a glass igloo that will allow the tourists inside feel warm and comfortable and at the same time enjoy the Northern Lights all night long.

Northern Lights: More than just a pretty light show

Northern Lights: More than just a pretty light show | Finland | Scoop.it
Humans have been fascinated by this unpredictable, eerie light show for centuries. But it’s amazing how little we know about the science behind it.

The thermometer on the car is reading -22C. Outside, we are standing in snow up to my knees. We’re in a region called Inari in Finnish Lapland, inside the Arctic Circle, the nearest town is some kilometres to the south of us. You would be forgiven for thinking you were in Narnia, next to a frozen lake and surrounded by snow-topped pine trees. I can see more stars then I have ever seen before and some of the constellations such as Cassiopeia are difficult to spot, the sky is so free from light pollution. Which is supposedly the ideal place to do what I am doing; I’m one of a small group of people in search of the Northern Lights.

Auroras Now!

Auroras Now! | Finland | Scoop.it

Auroras Now! Is a service which helps watching auroras in Finland.

Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) maintains the service, which includes magnetic field alarm systems for Northern and Southern Finland separately and an auroral monitor for Northern Finland. The magnetic alarms are based on the data of magnetometers measuring the disturbance level of the Earth’s magnetic field at the geophysical observatories in Nurmijärvi and Sodankylä. The auroral monitor shows images of the all-sky cameras. Auroras Now! is part of the ESA Space Weather Applications Pilot Project. [Photo: J. Jussila]
