In Rovio And Supercell’s Wake, Finland’s Gaming Scene Sees A Renaissance | TechCrunch

In Rovio And Supercell’s Wake, Finland’s Gaming Scene Sees A Renaissance | TechCrunch | Finland | Scoop.it

Somehow, 2013 marked the year that Helsinki became a global gaming capital in its own right.

Maybe it was because Supercell, a humble gaming studio that started back in 2010, blossomed into a $3 billion company in less than a year.

Or maybe it was when Rovio announced the two billionth download for Angry Birds with a dubstep dance on-stage from the Finnish National Ballet. Or...

Artikkeli kertoo mm.

These 12 Startups Prove Angry Birds Isn't The Only Hot Tech Product To Come Out Of Finland | Finland | Scoop.it

The Angry Birds game maker is insanely successful and has been the subject of IPO rumors since early 2011. Some have suggested the company may file its IPO next year.

But Finland has a number of other promising startups, thanks in part to government support of young companies in the country.

Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation, has invested more than $66 million in the gaming industry since 1995.

Last year, Tekes invested about $180 million in startups.

Defectors aim to create next 'Angry Birds'

Defectors aim to create next 'Angry Birds' | Finland | Scoop.it

HELSINKI, Finland (CNN) -- Tuomas Erikoinen, the man who drew the hit "Angry Birds" app, doesn't really resent his creation.
He's just bored with it.
He sees the game's grumpy, ball-shaped, wingless birds everywhere he goes, their furrowed brows staring him down. Here in Finland's capital, where "Angry Birds" began, Erikoinen's drawings have been turned into T-shirts, "plushie" stuffed animals and two brands of soft drinks -- Tropic and Paradise...http://bit.ly/Ln4dXx

Finland: Land of Angry Birds? - chayanin.in.th

Finland: Land of Angry Birds? - chayanin.in.th | Finland | Scoop.it

Having been an exchange student (in lukio level) in Finland, I have some ideas about how people around here perceive about this Nordic country, from comments or questions I got over the years.

They usually know that Finland is cold. Some of them think Finland has a beautiful nature. (Well, that’s kinda true. I like Finnish landscape.) Some touristic features about Finland are the midnight sun and Santa Claus. But that may have changed a little bit.

Angry Birds needs longer to hatch IPO

Angry Birds needs longer to hatch IPO | Finland | Scoop.it
The Finnish creator of the global smash-hit, Angry Birds computer game will not join the stock market this year but still aims to eventually seek a listing, its marketing chief said.

Angry Birds, in which players use a slingshot to attack pigs that try to steal the birds' eggs, has been downloaded more than 600 million times since its 2009 launch and turned small Finnish gaming firm Rovio into an enterprise valued at up to $9bn.

"We are not in a rush. This year is way too early for an IPO, there are too many open things, and we are in a very early stage of the Angry Birds lifecycle," marketing chief Peter Vesterbacka told Reuters.

Can children learn from Angry Birds? Learn more than which angles to ping birds at pigs, we mean. The games’ developer Rovio thinks they can.

Today, it’s unveiled something called Angry Birds Playground, a “learning concept” based on the national curriculum in the company’s home country of Finland, but designed to be used around the world. It was originally announced last year, aimed at 3-8 year-olds.

Angry Birds Will Never Die. Now There's A Movie In The Works.

Angry Birds Will Never Die. Now There's A Movie In The Works. | Finland | Scoop.it
Sony clearly has a lot of faith in the brand. The movie isn't slated to hit theaters until July 2016.

The move is the latest in Rovio’s quest for Angry Birds world domination. In addition to the seven Angry Birds games (including Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Star Wars) there are Angry Birdsbooks, Angry Birds merchandise and an Angry Birds cartoon. Rovio unveiled the in-game animated shorts in March and so far the toons have been viewed 150 million times.

It’s amazing that such a simple game is spawning such a vast franchise. Who would have thought that throwing birds with a slingshot would result in a business worth hundreds of millions of dollars?
