Paris Update - Le Havre

Paris Update - Le Havre | Finland | Scoop.it

Paris Update: What's happening in Paris this week @ParisUpdatecom:

Le Havre is a hybrid film in more ways than one. Made by a Finnish director in French and set in France, it is an old-fashioned fairytale about a very timely issue, illegal immigration.

Director Aki Kaurismäki, known for his quirky films, has filmed a straightforward story here, of a young African boy who is the subject of a police manhunt and is being helped by a group of local people.

Cineuropa - News - Production - Eurimages backs documentary on Finnish tango | Finland | Scoop.it
According to Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki, it was Finnish sailors who brought tango to South America when they landed at Buenos Aires in the 19th century. "The Finns are only happy when they are unhappy," he explained. Now German director Vivianne Blumenschein has decided to find out whether he is right, filming three Argentine musicians researching Finnish tango in Cheek to Cheek - Argentines Discover the Finnish Tango.

Produced by Germany's Gebrueder Beetz with Finland's Illume and Sweden's Eden Film, the documentary, which includes interviews with Finnish tango masters Allan, Reijo Taipale and MA Numminen has received €90,000 from Eurimages.

Director Aki Kaurismaki attends a news conference for the film ‘‘Le Havre’’, in competition at the 64th Cannes Film Festival, May 17, 2011.

“I was about 10 years old when I found myself disappointed (with life) so I decided to fake that I am not and I started to create hope for others because they still have some,” he said.
