IN 2010 A GROUP of students at Aalto University, just outside Helsinki, embarked on the most constructive piece of student activism in the history of the genre. They had been converted to the power of entrepreneurialism during a visit to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. When they got home they organised a “summer of start-ups” to spread the word that Finland’s future lay with new companies, not old giants. The summer of start-ups turned into a season of innovation.

In 2006 when Jaiku started, the Finnish web startup scene was practically nonexistent. There was no Aalto University, no accelerators, no encouragement, and no money. Still, there was a growing enthusiasm to do something, and there was Aula that brought interesting people to Helsinki. Only 5 years later, everything has changed. Helsinki has transformed into a vibrant startup hub with bursting creativity, self confidence, and humor. The Aalto University Metsähovi Radio Observatory has been involved in the development of AMS-02 (Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer) that was taken on NASA’s second but last space shuttle to the ISS International Space Station. The AMS will search for dark matter, missing matter and antimatter in space directly from the space station.

Researchers have found new evidence for the role of the brain in obesity and weight gain.

Although obesity typically results simply from excessive energy intake, it is currently unclear why some people are prone to overeating and gaining weight.

Because the central nervous system is intimately involved in processing of hunger signals and controlling food intake, it is assumed that the cause of weight gain and obesity might be in the brain.

Most previous studies have indicated that people in cities have a smaller carbon footprint than people who live in the country. By using more complex methods of analysis than in the past, scientists at Aalto University in Finland have discovered that people's carbon emissions are practically the same in the city and in the rural areas. More than anything else, CO2 emissions are dependent upon the amount of goods and services people consume, not where they live.

Last week I had 15 Finnish entrepreneurs out to the ranch (Aalto University has a partnership with Stanford’s Technology Ventures Program.) Monday we hosted 40 Danish entrepreneurs for dinner and today its graduate students from Chalmers University in Sweden.
Looks like the ice is melting in Scandinavia.

Researchers at Aalto University in Finland have found a way to cut the amount of fuel consumed by non-road mobile machinery by half. This new technology captures energy, which up to now has been lost by the machinery when working, and uses it instead of fuel.
The fuel consumption of construction and mining machines, agricultural machines and material handling machines is reduced significantly.
