Web searching

Finding, evaluating and referencing information online

KUGGE's insight:

This tutorial tests your knowledge about online searching. It highlights Google's advanced search, explains about critical evaluation of websites and subject gateways. There's also a section on referencing - however, the style differs slightly from Kingston University's Harvard style. It's worth completing the first few sections of the tutorial if you are starting to move from web search to research.

Become Better At Finding Stuff With Search Engines: Boolean Search Logic Explained

Become Better At Finding Stuff With Search Engines: Boolean Search Logic Explained | Finding Information Online | Scoop.it

"Boolean search logic illustrated in Venn diagrams can help you visualize what you are searching for. If you think this sounds suspiciously like mathematics, you’re spot on. But don’t let that discourage you! It’s pure and simple logic, demonstrated with pretty and very simple diagrams, and so it’s easy. I promise! And I have fun examples to prove it."

KUGGE's insight:

Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) can be extremely helpful to combine or exlude search keywords. This website visualises the impact of those little words. They might not be imperative for a simple Google search but they will make all the difference when you look for academic sources in databases!

TinEye Reverse Image Search

TinEye is a reverse image search engine built by Idée currently in beta. Give it an image and it will tell you where the image appears on the web. One of TinEye's goals is to connect images to their creators and facilitate attribution.

KUGGE's insight:

Where has this been all my life? Amazing search tool to track the evolution of online images: find where they have originated, see how they have been adapted and shared over time and which license type is associated with them. Especially the latter aspect will come in handy if you want to use pictures in your presentations or assignments - it's best practice to use creative commons material to avoid breaching copyright laws. After all, someone has spent time and energy in creating something unique - wouldn't you want to be credited if it was your work, too?
