Will Transmedia eat itself for lunch? Or is it the end of Storytelling as we know it? | storycodeX | How to find and tell your story | Scoop.it

"Transmedia storytelling ... probably the most promising combination of communication megatrends for the future.

Transmedia as an idea of collaborative, multi-platform creation and narration origins in the 70’s and 80’s of the last century, in the area of telematic art, where artists experimented with collaborative narration and defined the idea of transmedia."

As we move forward in this technological world, there will be developments that we can’t stop, that will simply happen (because we CAN and because we as humans will simply WANT it), whether we personally like them or not.

Read the full article to find out more about these three commandments of transmedia storytelling that can help steer technological developments into the right direction:

  • Concentrate on a good story
  • Don't let technology lead the way of a story

Creating Big Buzz Through New Modes Of Storytelling | Advertising Age

Creating Big Buzz Through New Modes Of Storytelling | Advertising Age | How to find and tell your story | Scoop.it

"Technology has completely changed the dynamic between brands who are actively creating products and those of us who consume them. What used to be a one-way dynamic -- I make a product, and then you go consume it - is today a two-way relationship. As a result, both our consumers, and us as marketers, are becoming just as important to the "storytelling" process.

Syfy TV shows "Defiance" and "Sharknado" reveal 5 key insights into how consumers are playing an increasingly active role in storytelling. These insights are extremely relevant "must haves" for any brand seeking to engage their customers, and are now helping guide Syfy's approach going forward."

One question that comes a lot is how to organize all the actions and events that a good transmedia experience has in a cohesive way. Not only does the transmedia story need to be organized from a designer’s perspective (videos, tweets, emails, etc.) over the run of the story but it needs to also be organized from a player’s perspective. This in itself is a major issue in transmedia design.

There is no ready-made solution for transmedia storytelling but it has come a long way. Here’s an incomplete list of some tools that can be useful for anything like transmedia.

TMC Resource Kit

TMC Resource Kit | How to find and tell your story | Scoop.it

The TMC (Transmedia, Multiplatform & Convergent) Resource Kit was conceived, designed & developed by Dr. Siobhan O'Flynn & Anthea Foyer. It is a living website that will evolve as new case studies & resources are added over the coming year to build an extensive set of diverse case studies modeling unique and successful strategies in the digital sphere.

http://www.uc.utoronto.ca/news/siobhan-oflynn-launches-transmedia-multiplatform-convergent-resource-kit

The resources aggregated here provide a rich and informative suite of documents for Canadian and Australian content producers moving into the digital space. Each illuminates specific areas of practice and taken together can answer many of the questions we have encountered in working and consulting on transmedia, multiplatform and convergent projects. The supplement to the Screen Australia Transmedia Bible expands on elements that are often unfamiliar to traditional media producers and which are not covered in the other resources gathered here. This section too is evolving & new resources will be added to it over time in response to changing technologies & practices.

Dr. O'Flynn's case studies are an extension of her research into the impact of digital media on narrative forms and communication practices.

Transmedia Storytelling for Content Creators | Spin Sucks

Transmedia Storytelling for Content Creators | Spin Sucks | How to find and tell your story | Scoop.it

Transmedia storytelling is technique that ties multiple platforms together to tell a common story, allowing content creators to build communities of passionate and engaged advocates.

It represents a process where elements of fiction are dispersed across multiple delivery channels for the purpose of creating a unified and coordinated entertainment experience, with each medium making a unique contribution to the unfolding of the story.  A single story may present some elements through a television series or a motion picture with additional narrative threads explored in other media: Comic books, video games, or a collection of micro-sites, Twitter feeds, and online content.

Fans can engage in a selection of these story elements or follow all of them to fully immerse themselves in the world of the story based entirely on level of interest.  Heroes on NBC is often cited as a great pop-culture example of transmedia in practice (read the full article to find out about the pieces they used). The result was a brand franchise that tells a much richer story than the primary text upon which the brand was built.

Brand Storytelling … are you on that next level yet? [transmedia!] | Red Hot Marketing Blender

Brand Storytelling … are you on that next level yet? [transmedia!] | Red Hot Marketing Blender | How to find and tell your story | Scoop.it

[this article also includes some interesting transmedia examples]

You will have seen from my various previous posts that I am passionate about how brands tell their stories. [e.g. here] And I keep searching for more answers on how to do that better. Key question to solve, today, is: how to cross all media with one single story in a seamless, media-complementary way. And by doing so, making the story (and thus, the brand) more appealing for the audience (i.e. your consumers). Seems easy to do, but proves very difficult to execute. How many brands really achieve that? It’s so easy to tailor your story to a certain medium, instead of looking at the overall picture and using each medium in itself as “part of” the story. And how do you organise for that to happen? Transmedia is the new way! See further in this note my 5 tips on how to get into transmedia the right way.

#1. Put the desired experience at center of your thinking!

#2. Go all the way!

#3. It’s about a story!

#4. Involve the consumer!

#5. In the midst of all the deep complexity transmedia creates, KEEP IT SIMPLE!

"Uncovering history as well as displaying statistics is really challenging and tricky, since traditionally both of them are associated with something boring and insipid that no one loves. However, it is hard to deny that we prefer visual over text, so why not turn this inclination into an advantage and reveal a series of facts and past events in a visually-appealing, engaging and alluring way thereby making a journey through history/story a really enjoyable and rewarding pastime. Besides, you do not have to reinvent the wheel, the solution is already here: visual storytelling is considered to be a new language for effectively and attractively communicating information."

One of the tools recommended in the instructions for a story idea is I Need a Prompt.  What a riot!  For 10 minutes I giggled as I flipped through suggestion after suggestion. It will certainly broaden your scope of potential story ideas.
