Wildlife Without Borders Critically Endangered Animals Conservation Fund

Wildlife Without Borders have laucnhed a fund aimed at the conservation of animals listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List and at risk of extinction in the immediate future.  The fund will look predominantly at projects linking data collection to managament action in order to reduce threats in the natural environment.  Captive management or ex-situ conservation efforts are unlikely to be considered.

Ecuador is proposing to not drill for an estimated 850 million barrels of oil in the Yasuni National Park if the international community pledges $3.6 billion to a United Nations Development Fund (UNDF). The Yasuni-ITT Initiative would preserve arguably the most biodiverse region on Earth from oil exploitation, safeguard indigenous populations, and keep an estimated 410 million tons of CO2 out of the atmosphere.

A group of Chinese philanthropists has announced plans to raise up to $15 million for efforts to preserve and protect nature worldwide, including the creation of a sanctuary in Africa for the hirola. Through the newly established China Global Conservation Fund, the group awarded $500,000 to the Nature Conservancy to build a 6,177-acre sanctuary in Kenya for the endangered African antelope, whose numbers have fallen from a total of sixteen thousand in the 1970s to four hundred today.
