Captain America

Captain America | AS Sociology | Scoop.it

Hopefully you will get to watch Captain America this week because it could be a really useful case study for the exam. I watched it last night and whilst I am not a big fan of comic book adaptations, the film kept my interest for the most part.

As of 2007, an estimated 210 million copies of "Captain America" comic books had been sold in 75 countries. Not only has Captain America appeared in comics, TV, computer games there have also been (and will be) lots of film adaptations

Captain America (1944)Captain America (1990)It is the modern adaptations featuring Chris Evans which have revitalized the brand:Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), The Avengers (2012) andCaptain America: The Winter Soldier (2014).Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) and Captain America 3 (2016)

SPOILER WARNING

Institutional issues: Captain America is a Marvel Comics creation. Marvel and its competitor, DC Comics account for 80% of comics sold in the US. Other Marvel characters include Spiderman, X Men, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Hulk Thor and the Silver Surfer. So, as you can probably guess, Marvel has enjoyed a lot of success at the box office, on TV, video games and ancillary products. In 2009 the Walt Disney Company (one of the largest media corporations in the world) acquired Marvel Entertainment for over $4 billion!  Thus, Captain America is part of a powerhouse which can invest huge amounts in order to seek maximum returns. According to IMDB, Captain America: The Winter Soldier has been very successful so far:

Budget: $170,000,000 (estimated)Opening Weekend: $95,023,721 (USA) (4 April 2014)Gross: $174,914,454 (USA) (17 April 2014)
Remember that worldwide revenues usually exceed the US box office and that DVD sales and ancillary products will raise the profit hugely. The takings actually are a record for April: http://www.deadline.com/2014/04/box-office-captain-america-smashes-april-opening-record-with-90m-to-95m-or-higher-estimate-for-disneymarvel/

RELEASE DATEThe release of a film needs to carefully managed and it is interesting that Disney chose to release Captain America in April not the summer blockbuster season. The following article is critical of the decision but as it acknowledges April is a good time for a release because there are very few other tentpole pictures released at this time - Captain America is a big fish in a small pond: http://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2013/09/18/disney-should-move-captain-america-2-to-july-4th-weekend/ ;

ADVERTISING AND MARKETING:The Chevrolet product placement in Winter Soldier was so overt, almost every car driven seemed to be from the brand!  Apple also feature several times, most notably in the Apple Shop which is designed to create a light comedic moment with the shop assistant.  Excellent examples of advertising and marketing for the 2011 version: http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/tv-movies/captain-america-marvel-to-the-max-marketing-film-includes-toys-food-apparel-article-1.161210 ;

REPRESENTATIONCaptain America is very much the blue eyed American hero and the patriotism in the film is unsurprisingly prevalent. The Captain and his helpers are fixated on preserving America's core value of freedom and this is worth dying for.The film taps into the zeitgeist because the evil organisation - Hydra in many ways represented the NSA and America's wish to create stricter controls in order to prevent terrorism etc. Hydra plans to eliminate 20 million people for the greater good of humanity and parallels can be drawn with America's invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan for example. Interestingly, the film plays with the audiences expectations of the Proppian villain. Thanks to his facial disfigurement, many audiences might expect Samuel Jackson's character to be the villain, but it does not turn out this way. From a gender perspective, the film cannot be considered at all feminist. Scarlett Johansson's character usually dresses in a very tight outfit and thus conforms to Laura Mulvey's theory of the male gaze. She is objectified for the viewing pleasure of the male audience. This character is by far and away the most prominent female in a largely male dominated text. Whilst she is powerful, smart and able to fight, on a number of occasions Captain America has to protect her and carries her to safety. So it could be argued that she conforms to some extent to the stereotypical weaker female role.The casting of African Americans is also of interest. Anthony Mackie's 'Sam' is very much a supporting character and he blindly follows Captain America - the Proppian helper. The character is does not particularly act in a 'black' fashion which is refreshing but he is  peripheral character compared to our hero and the representation cannot be considered particularly alternative.
