Netflix to Deliver All 13 Episodes of ‘House of Cards’ on One Day | film and film in digital age | Scoop.it

"Binge-viewing, empowered by DVD box sets and Netflix subscriptions, has become such a popular way for Americans to watch TV that it is beginning to influence the ways the stories are told — particularly one-hour dramas — and how they are distributed."

In the age of the Internet, how is storytelling changing? Freed from the tyranny of the broadcast schedule what are storytellers exploring? What is that revealing about how audiences respond and want to engage with storytelling?

The whole of House of Card is now on Netflix. No waiting a week for subsequent episodes. You can indulge your story lust and dive right in or you nibble at it with little bites.

Choice is yours.

So now what?

We've seen this treatment before with the Superman Lives project back in the 90's. It ended with an Emo-Superman who had a child with Louis, but first he went to space a few years, though we don't see or hear anything about it. A Lex Luthor who tricks a millionaire old woman into give him her money, then he spends it all to go to the Artic to steal the Man of Steel's crystals, in order to create new land, sell it and win some money (70's Luthor?).

Again, now what?

If they want the post-Crisis DC Universe (google Crisis on Infinite Earths), they have already almost 30 years of stories to adapt. We all know them, just go for it.

If they want the New 52 DC Universe (again, google it), then they can have the characters first, league later approach. It's all new; introduce us to the new version of our favorite characters.

Just decide already.

Randall Myburgh's curator insight, March 20, 2013 5:26 AM

DC should have followed suite when Marvel started making inwaves with the XMen series.  It is way too late to see the JL take any sort of market out of what is surely dominated by Marvel now.  Many die hard fans though would still like to see a JL movie though

Storytelling 101: What Makes a Good Story?

This was originally published on the Limelight Networks Blog as part of my day-to-day responsibilities as the Sr. Director of Marketing Strategy.

Storytelling is the future of digital marketing, plain and simple. If you aren’t on board yet, you are living in the past and each day you are “advertising” your products instead of “storytelling” about your business is another day your competitors are getting ahead of you. But before we jump into some ideas about what makes a good story, let’s look at the evolving digital marketer.

Andy Warhol interviews Alfred Hitchcock

Andy Warhol interviews Alfred Hitchcock | film and film in digital age | Scoop.it

This conversation that appeared in Interview Magazine in September 1974 doesn’t offer any great insights into filmmaking, but for what it lacks in informativeness it makes up for in novelty.

The meeting of these two icons of the 20th century is particularly significant, as each bridged high art and popular culture in unique intriguing ways. While on the surface it may seem like a odd pairing, they both share many things in common. Warhol and Hitchcock both started out as illustrators. Warhol had started his career working as a commercial illustrator, Hitchcock had started out creating illustrations for title cards in silent movies. Of course Andy and Alfred where also both film directors.

Has the mythical Hero’s Journey story form run its course, or is it perhaps truly a timeless expression of Human Nature?  So you want to write a screenplay?Today I saw that Christopher Vogler is coming to Paris with his three-day seminar on The Writer’s Journey His method is based on Joseph Campbell’s seminal book on comparative mythology, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, first published in 1949, which in turn is heavily indebted to Jungian analytical psychology. The announcement made me stop and think once again, seriously, about the value for screenwriters of trawling the history of storytelling for recurring story forms, character types, themes, etc.

The storytelling imperative: Make them care!

The storytelling imperative: Make them care! | film and film in digital age | Scoop.it

Pixar Studios filmmaker Andrew Stantongave a good TED talk about a year ago where he states that one of the key aims of any good story is that it must make the audience care. "Make me care," he says. If you research the advice of famous directors and screenwriters of today and of years gone by you will find this is a common refrain: You have go to make the audience care. Presentations in all their many forms are never just about transferring information alone. We are emotional beings, like it or not, and to connect and engage people to the degree that they will care enough to listen to you, you have to evoke in them some kind of emotion. The TED talk below is well worth watching; the storytelling lessons in this short talk are many.

Zan Chandler's curator insight, December 12, 2012 8:13 AM

Not every filmmaker will want to take on the huge task of self-distribution. But if you want to, there appear to be more and more precedents from which to draw inspiration.

The article, written by Brandon Harris, highlights the distribution journey for The Upsetter and touches on two emerging forms of revenue related to self-distribution:

- distrify.com and it's revenue sharing affiliate program where 10% of sales generated from sharing via social media go back to the initial paying viewer. I like this because it leverages behaviour that is a natural to us as humans - sharing what we like with friends and family.

- Vimeo's tip jar - where viewers can opt to compensate creators for their work. Tipping is not uncommon to many cultures as an expression of a good experience.

The final paragraph hits an important point for me.

“The old fashioned models will still be there should we want to utilize them,” says Lough, ... “however this is the future and I recommend all filmmakers from here on out carve out the rights to distribute their own films digitally through their websites and social media pages.”

I look forward to the time when every filmmaker is be able to distribute their work from their personal or company websites and social media.
