A Record-High Number of Young People Are Still Living With Their Parents: Why?

A story about jobs, bachelors, bachelor's degrees -- and a very weird government definition of "home"
Mighty Rasing's insight:

This isn't really a big issue here in the Philippines, but in the US, it is.

"We can begin to find the answers in the new mammoth Pew Research Report, released just this month, which found a record 21.6 million "Millennials" living at home. The answer boils down to three variables, which I'll sum up as: economics, bachelor's degrees, and bachelors.

We have to start with economics. The share of young people living in the basement was basically unchanged for four decades before the recession. Then the recession hit, and millions of young people who would have otherwise had jobs didn't."

A new study shows that such patients have a high risk of suffering from impaired fine-motor skills, memory and other cognitive skills.
Mighty Rasing's insight:

Early diagnosis is really important for those with HIV. Otherwise, these kinds of problems become more pronounced.

"Here's one more reason why young people with HIV should seek medical care as soon as they're diagnosed: A new study shows that such patients have a high risk of suffering from impaired fine-motor skills, memory and other cognitive skills.

Researchers analyzed health information from more than 200 patients age 18 to 24, who had been diagnosed with HIV within the previous two years.

Study participants took a battery of tests designed to evaluate their attention, memory, coordination and other motor skills, verbal skills and reading ability."

It doesn’t exactly reflect well on young people that the new additions to the Oxford Dictionaries Online are mostly related to image, reputation and sex, writes 20 year-old Isabelle Kerr, who questions why these slang words have been elevated...
Mighty Rasing's insight:

Language is ever evolving. But this young writer doesn't want lots of techno-related, youthful slang words to be immortalized by the dictionary.

"The Oxford Dictionaries Online have announced plans to include a variety of new, shall we say, colloquial words to their online collection, including slang words such as vom, selfie, unlike, digital detox, food baby and more. Sadly these are not misprints, nor has Word accidentally changed misspelt words into a seemingly-foreign language. These are in fact the pitiful emblems of the current young generation’s contribution to language. My generation. I am 20"

Our youth vote should not be ignored

Tim Christodoulou: For many of my high school friends, politics is nothing more than the invective hurled in parliament.
Mighty Rasing's insight:

Young people in Australia simply don't care about politics. But this is a cop out. They cannot escape government, and so they need to be aware of the things going on in their country and society.

Perhaps, the same could be said of a lot of young people in the Philippines--they just don't care about politics.

Research by the Australia Institute suggests young people simply don't care. 45% of respondents said they were not interested in this year's federal election and a mind-blowing 68% could not identify their local MP. Tellingly, just 32% knew how their parents vote, betraying an enormous lack of political discussion in Australian households.

This story is the first in a series – Future Shock: Millennials in Crisis – looking at how young people around the world are grappling with the transition to adulthood in a challenging global economy.
Mighty Rasing's insight:

First world? Third world? Global North? Global South?

Those labels don't matter anymore. Young people are terribly affected by global unemployment rates.

"“Our generation is a lost cause because they don’t let us work,” said Palomares-Romero, who lives with her parents in Orcasitas, a working-class neighborhood in the south of  Madrid.

Relief could be years away. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently forecast that the country would be stuck with 25 percent plus general unemployment for another five years.  This is one of the highest rates in the entire industrialized world."

We need to reach out to young people - KansasCity.com

Many of the policy decisions we make today are more significant for young people than anyone else, and we need to include them locally and nationally. And young people also have a duty to speak up and let us know where we’ve been wrong.

Mighty Rasing's insight:

When I was younger, older folks told us to beware the dangers of watching too much TV. Now, it's not TV but the Internet.

"An increasing number of young people are so obsessed with using smartphones and computers that their health and schoolwork are being undermined. Prompt measures should be taken at school and home to deal with this problem.

According to a recent survey by a Health, Labour and Welfare Ministry research team, about 520,000 middle and high school students are addicted to the Internet, particularly for online gaming and e-mailing.

The survey shows that 9 per cent of middle school students and 14 per cent of high school students access the Internet more than five hours each weekday."

"Yes, pornography is an issue of public morality. We have spoken to this repeatedly. A culture that doesn’t safeguard the dignity of human sexuality is a culture on its way to nihilism.

Yes, pornography is an issue of social justice. After all, pornography, at least as we know it today, is rarely about mere “images.” Behind those images stand real persons, created in the image of God, who through some sad journey to a far country of despair have tumbled down to this."

Khary Lazarre-White © Andrew French Chef Marcus Samuelsson serves up what Zagat calls his “creative gastronomy” at the Red Rooster restaurant in Harlem, New York City.
Mighty Rasing's insight:

"

“On one level it’s unbelievably complicated,” Lazarre-White said. “On the other level it’s completely simple: it’s what good families do for their children all around the world. Our theory of change is to provide support, guidance, love, and education to young people.”

Brotherhood/Sister Sol’s Rites of Passage Program teaches at-risk youth about history, culture, social issues, and the political forces that most affect them while activating critical thinking, conflict resolution, and leadership skills. The After School Program, held weekdays from 3 to 7 p.m., offers young people a place for creative expression through writing, the arts, and technology, and it encourages healthy relationships and lifestyle choices by introducing youth to issues such as sexual responsibility."

This is a big indictment of young people. While it may be true to some extent, I know that there are still young people who are making significant difference in the world today.

"If one requires definitive proof of the slow and steady cultural decline of our age, look no further than the state of youth. Raised on a steady diet of television, bland pop music and delusions of grandeur, the contemporary adolescent believes himself to be at the center of a grand narrative drama, his own self contained Dawson’s Creek, with the ability to invent and reinvent himself after the fashion of Bowie — as if anyone else were paying attention. Entirely lacking in class or refinement, they dress like caricatures of VICE  “Do’s and Don’t's,” act like reality show “stars” in public and plan to retire off future millions from their unwritten screenplay."

How young people are sucked in by raunch culture | Filipino Young People | Scoop.it
We can help young people challenge the porn industry's influence in everyday media.
Mighty Rasing's insight:

Young people are not critical of what they see as the display of sexy bodies on media. If it's any indication, Miley Cyrus' performance at the VMA is showing how young people can be taken in by this kind of culture.

"During my research, I have found that young people may be digitally adept but they are largely uncritical of the raunch culture they consume and emulate. Girls and their male peers take for granted a world where ''hotness and sexiness'' is central to their image. Raunch culture dominates much of the media that they prefer. It's not ''Why am I sharing highly intimate shots of myself and how may this affect my life?'', but ''This is the norm - why shouldn't I?''
