Do young people lack grit?

What has the world come to? A politician and a celebrity chef have both condemned the employment prospects of British young people by saying they lack the work ethic required to succeed in today’s job market.
Mighty Rasing's insight:

A lot of people (most of them in adults and those in the middle age) have complained about the sense of entitlement among young people these days. So, this new complaint is not really surprising.

But what do you think? Do our young people lack the grit and the self-discipline to achieve great things?

"Nick Hurd, Conservative minister for civil society, said young people lack “grit”, effectively social skills and discipline, while Jamie Oliver said foreign workers were far more able and competent compared to their British “wet behind the ears” counterparts. Are our young people’s attitudes today worse than previous generations or are they being made convenient scapegoats for a failed economy?"

Alcohol abuse is still a big problem among young people in the US and even here in the Philippines

“What we tend to forget is that alcohol is the drug of choice for teens and young adults, and alcohol will kill more people than any other drugs combined,” said Tym Rourke, director of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation’s department of substance use disorders. “Alcohol is the biggest issue, the biggest threat when it comes to substance abuse.”

Do young people’s multiple problems need modular solutions? | Prevention Action

Do young people’s multiple problems need modular solutions? | Prevention Action | Filipino Young People | Scoop.it
Mighty Rasing's insight:

This looks like a good approach to addressing the many and varied problems that young people are facing these days.

Mitchell argues that a modular practice elements approach would carry a number of advantages when treating young people will complex, multiple needs compared with conventional implementations of evidence-based practice:

• Individual tailoring: with interventions broken into smaller parts, practitioners would find it easier to mix and match techniques best suited to the individual.
• Integration with existing practice: instead of replacing what already exists, the new approach would build on its strengths.
• Varied modalities: while many evidence-based programs run in a single, highly structured mode (e.g. a planned series of group-work sessions), a modular approach could combine a number of modes and timescales.
• Cost efficiencies: training could concentrate on skills that are missing or underdeveloped among practitioners rather than training them in multiple, elaborate evidence-based programs.
• Sensitivity to context: as the clients’ needs shift, practice elements could be added or subtracted.
• Evaluation: research would improve knowledge about the effectiveness of “usual care” that has been poorly described and evaluated, as well as the overall modular approach.
• Inter-agency collaboration: a common language about practice elements would help to form a shared understanding of interventions across different services.

Senate panel to push for one-year SK polls postponement

Senate local government committee chairman Bongbong Marcos will push for the one-year postponement of the SK polls
Mighty Rasing's insight:

Senate proposes postponent of the SK elections. And to those who want to abolish SK, no way! Senator Marcos says its abolition is against the constitution.

"After the October 2014 polls, Marcos said government will again have to study how to synchronize the SK polls with the other elections.

“We don’t know but the SK and barangay elections are not really synchronized with the national polls. That’s a criticism of our system, we have elections every year. Let’s study it. Another issue we have to discuss is cost, practicality, in terms of policy, what do we want to do?”

Besides the Senate, Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr earlier called for the postponement of the SK and barangay polls, and to abolish the SK altogether.

Marcos said abolishing the SK goes against the Constitution, which provides for youth representation.

To our generation, class is dead; the Internet killed it

An article has been circulating in the Internet: Rachel Jablow’s “Has Our Culture Killed Class?”
Mighty Rasing's insight:

An insightful piece on social etiquette, ethics, and attitude in this uber-connected world of ours seen from the perspective of a young middle-class urbanite (or at least that's how the author sounded to me).

"The situation can be seen from a proactive perspective. Our consumerist appreciation of luxury brands isn’t always materialistic, it can also denote ambition and aspiration. It’s not always “if they can have it, I can have it too,” but maybe “someday, I will have it too,” to motivate people to work harder.

We should stop judging people by their selfies, mannerisms and first impressions, but by their ideas, intellect and involvement in the community. Our generation may be narcissistic, but it is also broad-minded and visionary, and in my opinion, that’s more noteworthy."

We send our young people strong messages. Two of them are “be whoever you want to be” and “do what is best for you.” I agree with both of these.
Mighty Rasing's insight:

Hey, young people, go out and volunteer!!

"We send our young people strong messages. Two of them are “be whoever you want to be” and “do what is best for you.” I agree with both of these. However, they place a strong emphasis on the individual person and do not tell the whole story of what it takes to be a quality adult. Developing and maintaining healthy and loving relationships will often be our greatest accomplishments. Likewise, being a loving member of a community is not only beneficial for the community members, but for the person themselves. We are social beings. Despite our ego-driven culture, we are healthiest when we are connected with others through positive relationships. One way to develop ties to our communities is to volunteer."

Tough job market may be blessing for young people

Tough job market may be blessing for young people | Filipino Young People | Scoop.it
Is your twenty-something betwixt and between, living at home, and causing you sleepless nights? Gainful employment, preferably in a career of choice, is key to helping young people feel as though they've negotiated the transition into adulthood.
Mighty Rasing's insight:

Nice take on the positive side of the unemployment problems being faced by young people in the United States and other developed countries.

"If jobs were readily available, young people would be able to quickly grab a work opportunity, never stopping to consider whether or not it's a good fit for them. With a paucity of job possibilities, however, twenty-somethings might as well take some time to find out what they're truly passionate about. By doing so now, they may avoid having to question their career satisfaction later, when family responsibilities could prohibit such a search."
