Skeleton Key, builds custom applications for companies who can’t find off-the-shelf software to meet their needs. Some of the applications they build are created in FileMaker Pro. Unfortunately, FileMaker Pro does not come with a tool to centrally manage FileMaker Pro preferences on multiple workstations or even for multiple users on the same system, e.g. in a Terminal Server or Citrix XenApp environment.

08/03/2013 - A good friend and I were talking about budgeting; she mentioned that all the budgeting apps she had tried on her iPhone either lacked features, were too difficult to use, or simply badly designed.
This gave me the idea to see what I could come up with using FileMaker Pro 12, designing the solution for use on the iPhone, iPad and also on desktop machines. After working on the idea for a few days, I came up with the solution that is the subject of this blog.

The methodology of this document is to take a problem and break it down into smaller, or compartmentalized, chunks that will eliminate possible causes of an issue in a thorough manner. The troubleshooting steps are laid out in a way that common causes of an issue are investigated first, and are either the resolution to the issue or eliminated as a possible cause. This progressively decreases the number of possible causes of an issue in a logical way.
Many times the steps you try first may appear simple in nature, but they are also the ones that are the easiest to overlook or the ones that are often taken for granted. However, these first steps and suggestions are important to perform precisely because they are so often overlooked, even by experienced computer troubleshooters.

FileMaker’s announcement is troubling from several viewpoints. Most notably, of course, is how at least hundreds of thousands of Mac and iOS users have been left high and dry, and not just for any old app, but for database software, which almost by definition holds important data. Of course, Bento won’t stop working any time soon, but without future development, there’s no telling what update to OS X or iOS will sound its death knell, and migrations are generally easier before compatibility starts being a problem.
